Proper storage of gearboxes

Proper storage of gearboxes

Proper storage of gearboxes is critical to ensure their reliability when they are put into service after an extended period. Here are some guidelines for long-term gearbox storage:

  1. Lip Seals Method:

2. Labyrinth Seals Method:

  • Similar to the lip seals method, spray shaft extensions with a suitable dry film preservative.
  • For gearboxes with non-contact labyrinth seals, use internal vapor-phase rust protective coating instead of complete oil fill.
  • Consider using commercial vapor phase rust inhibitors (e.g., Ashland Oil, Tectyl 859A, Cortec VP corrosion inhibitor).
  • Add 5 percent of the oil volume with the inhibitor.
  • Renew this method if storage period exceeds six months.

3. Oil Mist Method:

  • Suitable for large gearboxes with lip or labyrinth seals.
  • Introduce a clean air/oil mist mixture (1 part oil to 200,000 parts air) into the gearbox headspace.
  • Protects gear and bearing surfaces, keeps them lightly lubricated, and prevents corrosion.
  • Safe, non-hazardous, and won’t support combustion.
  • More expensive and challenging to implement.

Maintenance During Storage:

Remember to choose the method that best suits your gearbox type and storage conditions. If you have specific gearbox models, consult the manufacturer’s recommendations for optimal storage procedures. ?????
