Proper Perspective

Proper Perspective

Today's devotional is from Your Life Matters: Daily Reflections from the Psalms

"Though while they live they count themselves blessed—and people praise you when you prosper—they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life" - Psalm 49:18-19.

The 'they' in this verse are those who prosper. Modern media showcases the lives of the rich and famous and it is easy to become jealous and even covet what they have--beautiful homes, travel to exotic places, magnificent furnishings, clothing and jewelry, showing up at all the fancy events. David's wisdom pointed out, however, that no one is getting out of here alive, including the prosperous. Their wealth cannot provide eternal life, so for you to envy them and want what they have is short-sighted and dangerous. James was clear in his instructions about envy: "For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice" (James 3:16).

Search your heart and ask yourself, "Am I envious of what others have?" Do you look at the depictions of the rich and yearn for their lifestyle, even part of it? Do you have a proper perspective on your and their ultimate end and what (and Who) the source of contentment and eternal life are?
