PROPANE MOWERS: BY THE NUMBERS

PROPANE MOWERS: BY THE NUMBERS

1. Propane mowers cost about 30 percent less per hour to operate than gasoline.

2. Compared to gasoline, propane reduces greenhouse gases by 17 percent, and reduces carbon monoxide by 40 percent.

3. Contractors lose zero hours refueling at the pump — propane cylinders can be refilled before crews head out for the day and spare cylinders can be carried to sites on trucks and trailers.

4. Contractors can apply to receive $1,000 for a new propane mower or $500 for a certified conversion kit through the Propane Mower Incentive Program.

5. There are more than 135 models of propane mowers manufactured by 12 top brands, including Exmark, John Deere, and Toro.

6. Two major small engine manufacturers — Briggs & Stratton and Kohler — have developed propane engines.

7. In a survey of 150 contractors, 1 in 3 said they were somewhat likely or very likely to purchase a propane mower by 2019.

8. During the 2017 cutting season, more than 15,000 commercial mowers were in operation across the U.S.

9. More than 500 dealers have been approved for the Propane Equipment Dealer Point, which can help contractors locate a local, knowledgeable dealer selling propane mowers.

10. Operators have virtually zero fuel spills when refueling because propane mowers use a closed-loop fuel system.
