Propane called "expensive, highly polluting" by Clinton Policy Statement

Propane called "expensive, highly polluting" by Clinton Policy Statement

The following is a direct quote from a recently published policy statement from the #HillaryClinton campaign.

"Phase down the use of expensive and highly polluting fuel oil and propane to heat homes and businesses over the long term, improving air quality and protecting households from price spikes while reducing US oil consumption by more than 300 million barrels per year."

When Propane Industry leaders pressed for why #propane was included in this statement, the response was "It's just a policy statement ... No one will read it". I did.

What's wrong with this?

1. Propane is not a polluting energy. According to EIA data, propane's carbon footprint is just above Natural Gas (139 lbs / btu propane; 119 natural gas) and well below gasoline.

2. Prices spikes? Shale production of Propane has helped to reverse US dependence on foreign oil / propane. The US is a now net exporter of Propane. The Marcellus Shale Play accounts for 85% of the increase in #NGLs / propane supply. Supply glut has created sustainable supply volumes and low priced Propane.

3. Reduction of Oil consumption? As a percentage of the oil barrel, propane accounts for 6 %; Gasoline 50 % and Fuel Oil 20 %. If Clinton truly wants to reduce oil consumption; propane doesn't barely move the needle. Oil consumption has increased in the last two years consecutively.

Furthermore, elsewhere in the policy brief, Clinton notes a need to "accelerate the deployment of high efficiency natural gas-fueled trucks, buses". The infrastructure for Natural Gas powered vehicles can cost as much as $300,000 versus costs starting around $30,000 for a propane filling station.

If #Hillary truly cared about saving all Americans money and providing them with inexpensive clean fuel alternatives; she would look to Propane and its benefits. Propane is a clean burning, affordable, reliable, portable and #AMERICANMADE.

Propane (and closer to the equator butane) are excellent higher density fuels that don't require so much energy to get to a usable state. (unlike CH4 and H2 which require either cryogenic storage or 3000psig and up storage. Not to mention they make superior and cheap refrigerants.
