Proof
"Proof".....When your young and just starting out you hear that term on a regular basis. It's usually buried in a challenge...."we'll see how you do, the proof is in the results." That's a great stage in your life as an engineer but it comes as kind of a veiled threat....because what's implied is that perhaps you will fail and that is a different kind of "proof!"
The truth is that for more than 30 years now I have sought just those kinds of assignments...the ones that come with huge risks....pushing technology and people to new limits. At this stage in my career I like the new proof...the one that say's maybe you're worth having around...just in case the team needs to win one in the bottom of the 9th, it's handy to have someone around who's played in the big games....you see now I get to help teach the next generation of risk takers (that is if they have humility enough to learn)..and if not the opportunity always exists somewhere... where a team needs a clutch hitter in the bottom 9th of the big games, and where risk is still rewarded!!!
