Pronouns: Why It Matters to Include Them in Your Email Signature

You might have noticed a growing trend of people including their pronouns in email signatures and social media profiles. Although it seems like a small detail, it’s actually a powerful step to creating a more inclusive and respectful workplace, especially for our LGBTQIA+ colleagues.

What Are Pronouns and Why Do They Matter?

Pronouns are words we use to refer to people without using their names. Some common pronouns are "he/him," "she/her," and "they/them." Using the correct pronouns for someone is a basic way to show respect for their gender identity.

For LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly those who are transgender, non-binary, or genderqueer, being addressed by the correct pronouns acknowledges their identity and helps build a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Why Include Pronouns in Email Signatures?

  1. Promotes Inclusivity: By including your pronouns in your email signature, you signal that our company is a safe and inclusive space for everyone, regardless of their gender identity.
  2. Reduces Misgendering: It helps prevent the awkwardness and discomfort that can arise from assuming someone's gender incorrectly. This is especially important in written communication where we don’t have visual or vocal cues.
  3. Encourages Openness: When you share your pronouns, you’re inviting others to share theirs, promoting an environment of openness and mutual respect.
  4. Supports 2SLGBTQIA+ Colleagues: Your action can make a significant difference in the lives of your LGBTQIA+ coworkers, showing that you value and respect their identity.

Did you know this small step can also help reduce the gender gap? Here’s How:

  1. Breaks Down Stereotypes: By normalizing the sharing of pronouns, we challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes, making space for a broader understanding of gender.
  2. Promotes Equality: Recognizing and respecting diverse gender identities contributes to a more equitable workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive without fear of discrimination or bias.
  3. Fosters Allyship: When more people, especially those who are not part of the LGBTQIA+ community, actively share their pronouns, it shows solidarity and support, helping to bridge gaps in understanding and empathy.
