Promotion is about your potential - not your performance.
This is why someone can be there less time than you and outpace you; why they can have less experience than you and become your boss; why they can have fewer credentials than you and land the big role you wanted.
While time on the job, good experience and solid credentials are valuable - they often fail to beat potential.
Shining a light on your potential is about shining a light on the value you’ll add at the next level. And that has very little to do with the work you do now.
Many of us get stuck on what we’ve done. Now don’t get me wrong, it is very good work… but it’s not justification to get promoted. When it stands alone, it’s makes the case to stay right where you are.
In a performance conversation, it’s all about your receipts… what you’ve done. In a performance review your positioning is “Here’s what I did”
But in a promotion conversation, it should be more about “Here’s what I can do”
Many of us go wrong in our approach. We attempt to justify why we should get promoted based on what we’ve done. Sis, wrong evidence????
Remember… doing good work will not get you promoted. It’s knowing how to shine light on your potential that opens that door.

When’s the last time you had a PROMOTION conversation with your manager?Some of y’all just said “Never”.
Don’t feel bad… it’s not uncommon.
You like many others expect to be recognize because of good work. And while that sounds reasonable, it’s NOT an effective career strategy.
Fact: Most managers are NOT career builders nor are they disruptors.Your manager’s agenda is strong team performance and retention. Managers want to avoid turnover because it typically jeopardizes the team’s output and disruption results whenever someone leaves or shifts.
