Promoting Inclusion in Schools: The Role We All Play

Promoting Inclusion in Schools: The Role We All Play

As we head back to school, we must recognise the importance of creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. This is especially true given the strong political divide.

WE ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO OUR BELIEFS; HOWEVER, WE ALSO ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY REGARDLESS OF OUR OR OTHERS' BELIEFS.

Promoting diversity and inclusion is not just the responsibility of educators; it's a collective effort that requires active participation from teachers, parents, and students alike. By working together, we can build school cultures that celebrate differences and ensure everyone can thrive.

As a dyslexic, early school leaver, author, inclusion practitioner, and PhD candidate, I can personally attest to the importance of micro-moments of inclusion . These moments are not just about making people feel good; they are crucial for mental well-being, team collaboration, self-esteem, and a sense of shared responsibility for our communities.

AS WE RETURN TO SCHOOL SETTINGS, LET'S STRIVE TO RESPECT AND EMBODY THESE 14 FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES.

They are ideals and a call to action for each of us to promote inclusion in our schools.

  1. Value Every Voice - Every voice matters. It's crucial to create opportunities for all school community members to share their thoughts and ideas, regardless of background, age, or gender. Everyone deserves a chance to be heard, starting by actively listening to each other.
  2. Acknowledge Bias – Bias is a functional part of being human; however, it can sometimes disadvantage people for things outside their control. ?It can affect our behaviour and decisions in ways we may not realise. The first step in promoting inclusion is recognising and challenging these biases in ourselves and others. Doing so, we enlighten ourselves and open the door to meaningful change.
  3. Foster Open Communication—Open, honest communication is a key element of inclusion. Encourage transparent dialogue where people feel safe expressing their opinions and concerns. Building trust through communication can help dismantle barriers and foster a shared understanding.
  4. Promote Equity - It's important to understand that equality and equity differ. While equality means treating everyone equally (the same!), equity involves recognising and addressing disparities to ensure equal opportunities for all. Schools should strive to create equitable learning environments where every student has the support they need to succeed.
  5. Respect Intersectionality - We all have multiple overlapping identities that shape our experiences and perspectives. Recognising the complexities of intersectionality helps us to understand the diverse experiences of others and to create more inclusive spaces.
  6. Commit to Continuous Learning - Inclusion is not a one-time achievement; it is an ongoing process. As our understanding of diversity and inclusion evolves, so must our efforts to educate ourselves and others. By committing to continuous learning , we can stay informed and aware of the changing landscape.
  7. Lead by Example - Whether you are a teacher, parent, or student, you have the power to be a role model for inclusion. Demonstrate inclusive behaviour in your day-to-day actions and encourage others to do the same. Be the change you wish to see in your school community.
  8. Co-create Safe Spaces—A truly inclusive environment is one where everyone feels safe—physically and emotionally. Co-creating spaces where sensitive topics can be discussed openly and respectfully without fear of judgment or discrimination is essential.
  9. Be Accountable—Accountability is crucial to upholding diversity and inclusion principles. Hold yourself and others responsible for maintaining these standards. Acknowledge mistakes, learn from them, and strive to improve.
  10. Celebrate Diversity - Diversity is a strength, not a challenge. Embrace the different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives within your school. Celebrate the richness that diversity brings to learning and life.
  11. Active Listening - Active listening goes beyond simply hearing words; it involves being fully present, suspending judgment, and deeply engaging with the speaker to understand their perspective.
  12. Promoting Belonging - Belonging is feeling accepted, included, and valued for who you are. Inclusive leaders promote belonging by creating an environment where everyone feels they are a vital part of the school and that their unique contributions are appreciated.
  13. Inclusive decision-making ensures that all impacted people are involved in shaping decisions, policies, and strategies.
  14. Flexibility - involves adapting practices, policies, and behaviours to accommodate employees' diverse needs and working styles. ?
