As we commemorate National Fair Housing Month this April, it’s crucial to reflect on the strides we've made in providing stable housing for all individuals and families. In particular, the efforts of organizations like St. Anne's Family Services have been instrumental in addressing homelessness and promoting fair housing practices in Los Angeles. Fair housing and programs for permanent, supportive housing are interconnected in several ways. Fair housing ensures that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has equal access to housing opportunities. This includes individuals and families who may require permanent, supportive housing due to various factors such as homelessness, disabilities, or other challenges. Programs for permanent, supportive housing focus on providing stable and long-term housing solutions for vulnerable populations.
These programs not only offer housing but also provide comprehensive support services such as healthcare, counseling, employment assistance, and life skills training. Fair housing policies and initiatives play a crucial role in advocating for and protecting the rights of individuals who require permanent, supportive housing. They aim to eliminate discrimination and ensure that individuals have equal access to safe, affordable, and appropriate housing options.
In 2019, St. Anne's Family Services took a significant step forward with the opening of Beverly Terrace, a Permanent Supportive Housing complex designed for multi-generational families. This initiative aimed to provide housing for both men and women who have experienced chronic homelessness, offering life-transforming resources to help them achieve stability.
The impact of programs like Beverly Terrace cannot be overstated, especially in a city like Los Angeles, where homelessness remains a pressing issue. According to 2023 statistics from the City of Los Angeles, over 21,600 unhoused individuals were brought in and provided housing. Of those, more than 3,500 individuals were placed in permanent housing, thanks to collaborative efforts between organizations, local government, and community stakeholders.

Furthermore, the approval of over 4,600 housing units and the referral of over 18,700 households to caseworkers highlight the comprehensive approach taken to address homelessness in Los Angeles. Additionally, the recruitment of over 200 pro-bono attorneys underscores the commitment to preventing homelessness and protecting tenants' rights.
Credit must also be given to the leadership of Mayor Karen Bass and the City of Los Angeles for their dedication to getting families and individuals off the streets and helping them stay housed. Their initiatives and policies have played a vital role in creating a more equitable and inclusive housing landscape.
However, the work is far from over. As we continue to strive for fair housing opportunities for all, it's essential for individuals and communities to come together and support organizations like St. Anne's Family Services. Our Evening of Angels event, held annually, serves as a critical fundraiser to ensure that St. Anne's can continue to provide women and families in Los Angeles with supportive housing, workforce development, mental health resources, and more.
By attending the Evening of Angels event this Saturday, you're not only showing your support for fair housing initiatives but also contributing to the well-being and stability of families across Los Angeles. Together, we can make a difference and create a more just and compassionate society for all. Join us in championing fair housing policies this National Fair Housing Month and beyond.
