Promoting economic opportunity in the Northern Triangle
Yesterday, I met with the U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris, to discuss her Call to Action for businesses and social enterprises to make new, significant commitments to help promote economic opportunities in the Northern Triangle region and drive inclusive growth.
As part of this Call to Action, I am proud to announce that Nespresso has joined a coalition of private sector leaders and organizations brought together by Vice President Harris to spur economic and social development in Central America. The Partnership for Central America will provide targeted support in areas such as financial inclusion, food security, education and workforce development, and climate adaption methods across Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Nespresso is committed to improving livelihoods in the Northern Triangle and we will expand our AAA Sustainable Quality? Program in Guatemala while also starting to implement it and source quality coffees from El Salvador and Honduras. These efforts will create new economic opportunities for smallholder farmers and replicate the positive social and environmental impact of our AAA Program in more communities. We will aim to support the local economy with a minimum of $150 million spent across coffee purchases, price premiums and technical assistance by 2025, more than doubling both the number of coffee farms it works with and total coffee volumes.
I strongly believe that coffee can be a force for good and in the power of private-public partnerships to develop relevant projects to foster economic and inclusive growth for communities and to preserve local ecosystems. I have seen first-hand the positive impact that our AAA Sustainable Quality? Program can have in the lives of coffee farmers and their communities, by improving their yields and coffee quality to increase revenues, paying higher prices for their high quality coffee, supporting them to build resilience to climate change through regenerative agricultural practices and agroforestry and promoting human rights protection and gender equality.
We now work directly with over 120,000 coffee farmers in 15 countries as part of the AAA Program. I look forward to further expand our activities, to support new communities and contribute to the goals of the Partnership for Central America.
I would like to thank Vice President Harris for inviting us on the journey and for the inspiring discussion yesterday.
