As someone that works in tech but is not an Artificial Intelligence (AI) or political expert, I find it intriguing, and somewhat concerning, to consider the implications of AI in our daily lives. Especially with the news of Donald Trump returning to office as the next US President, it’s interesting to understand the influence of AI, both positive and negative. These include benefits like increased efficiency, enhanced decision-making, and predictive analytics that help tackle global issues like climate change and public health. In government, AI-driven insights can improve services, optimise resources, and enhance security. However, AI’s potential for influence also presents risks, particularly at the intersection of politics and social media.?
AI and Social Media: Amplifying Divisive Influence?
AI-powered social media algorithms, designed to maximise engagement, often promote emotionally charged and sensational content. This capability has empowered influential figures, such as Donald Trump, to spread their messages rapidly, potentially reinforcing polarised views. The concern is that these algorithms may create "echo chambers” where users primarily see content that supports their existing beliefs, limiting exposure to alternative perspectives and fuelling social division, the antithesis of democratic debate and governance.??
Ethical Concerns: Control and Political Manipulation?

A key concern is AI's potential to manipulate public opinion, especially when used by those in power. Advanced AI can personalise content to the point of influencing political preferences, potentially swaying elections and shaping policies. Without ethical oversight, leaders could harness AI for personal gain, stifling opposition or magnifying misinformation. This risks creating an environment where the line between truth and influence blurs, and democratic transparency is undermined; are we now entering the age of misinformation.?
The Need for Responsible AI Development?
In my humble opinion, to leverage AI positively, governments, tech companies, and regulatory bodies must establish transparent guidelines and ethical standards. Responsible AI can enhance democracy, but without careful governance, it risks deepening divisions. Finding a balance between AI's promise and its perils is essential to ensure it serves the public good and strengthens, rather than undermines, our democratic system.??

4 个月Great article, Gareth Mapp! It's fascinating to see how the political landscape is being shaped by AI today - and how it may be in the future. It's wild to see that the way AI works currently is quite close to the dystopian futures imagined in cyberpunk literature, and I think it's the responsibility of everyone working in this space to ensure the future is ethical and fair ??
