Prominence Powerhouse: Rebecca McCarthy

Meet our October Prominence Powerhouse, Rebecca McCarthy! As the Strategic Initiatives Manager, Rebecca is passionate about making a tangible impact on the communities we serve. After starting her journey with UHS in 2017 and working on various ACO projects, she joined our Accountable Care team three years ago. Since then, Rebecca has thrived in leading initiatives that drive positive outcomes and improve health equity. She is a trailblazer within our organization, truly changing the way we deliver healthcare. Read on to learn more about Rebecca!

What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?

I was inspired to work in healthcare after taking a fascinating healthcare policy class in college. Healthcare is such a multidisciplinary field, and the output of our work has a tangible impact on our communities.???

Why Prominence Health?

I love that Prominence embodies “healthcare is local”. We are in the markets we serve, meeting members, and delivering tailored support to the people in our communities. This is so important in moving the needle on outcomes, delivering strong patient experience, and improving health equity.

I’ve had so many opportunities to support interesting and valuable projects. I would not have had this level of exposure anywhere else. I’m grateful for the organization’s trust to drive projects from the ground up.

Are there any projects or initiatives at Prominence that you are particularly passionate about?

The two that come to mind are the Central Referral Coordination Team and the Pinnacle Primary Care joint venture. The Central Referral Coordination Team supports the PCPs in our STX ACO by coordinating their specialty referrals on their behalf. It’s a critical and challenging process. I worked on this project since it was born and I’m so proud of how that team has grown, the analytics we’ve developed around this program, and the value it provides to the market.

The Pinnacle JV in NNV is another labor of love that I have been able to support since the joint venture transaction in 2022. I’ve learned so much through this project and am proud of how Pinnacle has continued to mature.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?

In 2019, I won both the monthly and quarterly rounds of an open mic competition in Philly and made it to the finals of the city-wide event. It was wild—I didn’t even mean to enter in the first place! I didn’t win (there were some REALLY amazing bands), but it was so validating to be recognized by my peers, and it was the moment that pushed me to start a band instead of just performing solo.

Fast forward to last year, I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon. I’ve never identified as a runner, so that moment was super meaningful. I’m proud of my body for getting me through it and so grateful I get to run in my city!

And, of course, through all of this, I’ve had my dog Zuko by my side. He’s a 3-year-old German Shepherd and my first dog ever. Zuko has taught me so much about patience, priorities, and being present. I love that dog so much. He rocks—and he knows it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Continuing to pursue strategic and innovative ways to deliver healthcare. This field is ever-changing, and there’s still a ton of room for disruption. I’m excited to continue growing in this space and furthering my capabilities!?

What's something we'd be surprised to learn about you?

My family and I are a very tight-knit squad: I live with my sister and my dog, and our parents live close by. We have a lot of fun together.?

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Trust your gut. Never stop knocking on doors to chase opportunities. Know your worth and demand greatness from yourself and others.
