project44's Unique Approach to Ocean and Port Visibility
Jett McCandless
Founder and CEO of project44 | Transforming Logistics and Transportation
Ocean, port, and intermodal transport are vital yet complex pieces of the visibility puzzle. The project44 network extends across all modes to give our customers (and their customers) frictionless visibility into all their shipments, inventory, and orders. To make that happen, we can’t simply focus on one mode, we need to stitch together every leg of the journey from manufacturer to end customer.
Ocean has been a tricky thing to nail down for most visibility providers. At p44, we hired the best technologists & ocean freight experts to internally spearhead our ocean product over a year ago. Building this solution in-house is important to us as we completely own the roadmap and can ensure it fits intuitively and effectively into our overall platform. Delivering a full product without needing to rely on technical partnerships also ensures that our customers have access to rapid implementation and seamless support experiences.
This is a particularly important time for ocean visibility, which is why we’ve worked extra hard to provide our customers with the most complete multimodal visibility solution on the market, and why we’ve recently refined our ocean product to make it the best it can be.
The How and Why of project44’s Approach to Ocean and Port Visibility
project44 offers a unique approach to ocean visibility that enables shippers, including beneficial cargo owners (BCOs), freight forwarders (FFWs) and third-party logistics firms (3PLs), to track ocean shipments on the container level as they arrive in port, cross the ocean, and are moved through their arrival port onto rail or truck. The level of precision provided by our platform was previously unattainable, and when combined with our full suite of multimodal solutions, it allows organizations to automate key processes and unlock a larger set of actionable end-to-end insights to improve shipping performance.
Ocean carriage is typically the first data point in a long journey for most shipments. Without ocean and port data, you simply cannot optimize your flow of inventory and improve ROIC. Until recently, much of the valuable information generated by ocean carriers and shipping terminals has been difficult, if not impossible, to seamlessly access. Solving ocean and port visibility provides our customers with a wealth of supply chain data they previously could not access. We provide data around when containers are in gate, ramped, departing, arriving, de-ramped, and out for delivery, minimizing the uncertainty from ship to intermodal. It provides users with a better understanding of not only the ocean leg of their shipment but what happens at terminals and during the inland journey as well. This gives them the visibility they need to increase efficiency, lower expenses, and enhance their customers’ experiences. Accurate ATA drives better decision-making while location-based vessel ETAs allow for more efficient planning, inventory management, and reduced fines from missing delivery windows.
Where project44 Provides Crucial Efficiency Gains to Ocean Freight
The key to unlocking the potential of ocean, port, and intermodal visibility is obtaining high-fidelity data and stitching it together with the rest of the journey. That’s why API technology is a complete game-changer—it makes it easier to get that data, ensure its quality and timeliness, and share it with customers and partners through the Advanced Visibility Platform. Our products factor in an enormous historical data set that takes into account over 10 years of ocean data allowing for predictive analytics, efficient routing, and accurate ETAs. To state the obvious, more efficient routing means using less fuel. Weather impacts route selection and speed, and our weather tracking model enables us to predict disruptions before they happen. When combined with the rest of our dynamic, multimodal supply chain data, our customers get a single source of truth that they can share with their customers and partners. Everyone is operating based on the same information, everyone cuts costs and gains efficiency, and everyone wins.
At project44, we exist to enable a more productive and successful world. There is no part of the supply chain that we won’t try to make more efficient for our customers. Ocean presents a unique set of challenges, but our in-house solution is equally unique and extremely effective.
