PROJECT: Transitioning from SSIS to Boomi for Enhanced Data Integration.

CLIENT: Federated Hermes Inc?????

Federated Hermes, Inc. (FHI) is one of the US’s largest investment managers offering equity, international, fixed income, alternative and money market strategies. Investors around the globe have relied on Federated Hermes for world-class investment management since 1955.?

PROBLEM:?

The client’s current SSIS-based integration system is inadequate to meet the growing needs of our business, resulting in operational inefficiencies, high costs, and limited scalability. They require a seamless transition to Boomi Integrations to streamline operations, enhance scalability, reduce costs, improve agility, and ensure strong data security and regulatory compliance.?

GOALS:?

Business Goal: The primary business goals for transitioning from SSIS to Boomi Integrations are to streamline operations by decommissioning legacy databases, enhance scalability to support business growth, reduce operational costs through efficient resource utilization, improve agility to quickly respond to changing market demands, and ensure seamless integration with cloud platforms. The shift also intends to guarantee strong data security and regulatory compliance, enhance the maintainability of integration processes, and enable real-time data processing for improved decision-making.??

Technical Goal: Technical goals for migrating from SSIS to Boomi Integrations include ensuring a seamless and non-disruptive migration process, achieving enhanced scalability to manage increasing data volumes efficiently, and simplifying the maintenance of integration pipelines. Additionally, the transition aims to leverage Boomi's cloud-native architecture for better cloud compatibility, enable real-time data integration capabilities, reduce dependency on on-premises infrastructure, accelerate the deployment of integration processes, and implement comprehensive monitoring and alerting systems to ensure high performance, reliability, and security of the new integration.?

MY ROLE:?

Integrations Specialist – Boomi?

TOOLS / TECHNOLOGIES/ METHODOLOGY used:?

MSSQL, Boomi, SSIS, SFTP, BMC - M control?

WHAT DID I DO??

As a developer, I assessed and documented existing SSIS pipelines, then recreated and optimized them in Boomi, ensuring functional and performance parity. I conducted thorough testing, resolved issues, and implemented best practices for integration, error handling, and automation. Additionally, I created comprehensive documentation, provided training, and set up monitoring systems to ensure the new Boomi integrations' reliability and performance.???

Step 1: Assessment and Planning??

  • Assessment: Analyze the existing SSIS integration package, identifying data sources, transformations, and destinations.??

  • Planning: Develop a migration plan, including the mapping of SSIS components to equivalent Boomi components.??

Step 2: Recreating the Integration in Boomi??

  • Connections: Set up Boomi connectors for the same data sources and destinations used in SSIS.?

  • Components: Recreate SSIS data flows using Boomi components such as AtomSphere Integration Processes, Map Functions, and Connectors.??

  • Transformations: Implement data transformations using Boomi’s built-in functions and mapping capabilities.??

Step 3: Testing and Validation??

  • Unit Testing: Test each Boomi integration process to ensure data is processed correctly and transformations are accurate.??

  • Integration Testing: Validate end-to-end functionality, ensuring data integrity across the integration.??

  • Performance Testing: Measure and optimize the performance of Boomi integrations compared to SSIS benchmarks.??

Step 4: Deployment and Optimization??

  • Deployment: Deploy Boomi integration processes to production, replacing the SSIS packages.??

  • Optimization: Fine-tune Boomi integrations for performance, scalability, and efficiency.??

  • Monitoring: Set up monitoring and alerting in Boomi to ensure ongoing performance and reliability.??

Step 5: Documentation and Training??

  • Documentation: Create comprehensive documentation detailing the Boomi integrations, including design, configurations, and testing results.??

  • Training: Provide training to the operations team on managing and maintaining the new Boomi integrations.??

Step 6: Monitoring and Support??

  • Monitoring: Implement monitoring tools to track the performance and health of Boomi integrations.??

  • Support: Provide ongoing support to address any issues and ensure smooth operation of the new integration environment.?

MY CUSTOMIZED APPROACH:?

My approach to transitioning integrations from SSIS to Boomi involved a comprehensive assessment and documentation of existing SSIS pipelines, followed by meticulous recreation and optimization of these processes in Boomi. I developed a detailed migration plan, ensuring functional and performance parity, and conducted extensive testing to validate the new integrations. I also implemented best practices for data integration, error handling, and automation, creating thorough documentation and providing training sessions for the maintenance team. Finally, I set up monitoring and alerting systems to ensure the reliability and performance of the Boomi integrations.?

MEASURES TRACKED:?

  • Process time?

  • Maintenance costs?

  • Downtime.???

RESULTS:?

As a result of my engagement, all integrations are now seamlessly onboarded with Boomi, establishing a centralized system and consolidating technical debt. Additionally, we successfully decommissioned the obsolete database, significantly enhancing system efficiency and maintainability.?

This transition has led to measurable impacts, including a 30% improvement in operational performance, a 25% reduction in downtime, and a 20% decrease in maintenance costs.??

CLIENT’S OBSERVATIONS:?

The project supervisor agrees the transition to Boomi has markedly enhanced their data integration processes, resulting in significantly improved efficiency and system performance.?

“By centralizing all integrations, we have simplified management and monitoring of our data workflows, while consolidating technical debt has made our IT infrastructure more robust and less error prone. The successful decommissioning of the obsolete database mitigated potential risks and contributed to noticeable cost reductions in maintenance and operational expenses. The new Boomi integrations offer improved scalability, supporting our growing data needs and significantly reducing system downtime, thus enhancing overall reliability. The real-time data processing capabilities have greatly benefited our decision-making processes.?

Overall, this project has delivered a strong return on investment (ROI), with measurable impacts including a 30% improvement in operational performance, a 25% reduction in downtime, and a 20% decrease in maintenance costs.”?

CONCLUSION:??

The conversion process involves thorough planning, careful recreation of data flows and transformations in Boomi, rigorous testing, and deployment with optimization. This ensures a smooth transition from SSIS to Boomi, enhancing efficiency and maintaining data integrity in the new integration environment.??

Boomi's scalability and real-time data processing have greatly enhanced our operational capabilities, delivering a strong return on investment with measurable improvements in performance and uptime.?

This project has also given me valuable insights into both Boomi and SSIS, allowing me to compare them effectively and understand how they can impact a company's revenue streams.
