About the Bridge

The Charlestown Bridge, officially named the North Washington Street Bridge, is located in the heart of downtown Boston, spanning over the Inner Boston Harbor at the end of the Charles River. This bridge has served as a vital link between the vibrant Charlestown and North End neighborhoods of Boston and carries a portion of the historic Freedom Trail linking to the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill.

Originally constructed in 1898, the existing structure had reached the end of its useful life and was requiring increased maintenance and emergency repairs. After more than 100 years of faithful service, the North Washington Street Bridge is being replaced with a new bridge for the 21st century, a complete street over water that works for everyone.

Replacement Project

In Spring 2018, J.F. White Contracting Company was awarded the demolition and replacement project of the North Washington Street Bridge for a $177 Million Contract value. Construction began in August 2018 and is estimated to be complete by Spring 2025.

About the Project

The project’s?estimated?milestones:

• 3 lanes of traffic will switch to the new bridge in December 2023
• The new bridge will be fully open to all users in late 2024
• The contract will be completed in Spring 2025

The new bridge will have:

????????Two vehicle lanes in each direction.

????????One dedicated inbound bus lane.

????????Two 8’ Wide Separated Bike Lanes.

????????Expanded sidewalks.

????????A wide scenic overlook and seating area.

????????A widened navigation channel for boats and watercraft.

????????Architectural design elements that visually complement the iconic Zakim Bridge.
