Managing a Portfolio of Projects: Aligning Multiple Initiatives with Business Objectives
Project portfolio management (PPM) involves managing multiple projects as a cohesive portfolio to achieve an organisation's strategic objectives. One of the biggest challenges in PPM is ensuring that each project aligns with the organisation’s overall strategy and delivers value. In my experience, this can be difficult when projects have competing priorities or limited resources.
In one organisation, I managed a portfolio of projects, each with its stakeholders and objectives. The challenge was ensuring the resources were allocated to maximise the portfolio's overall value rather than prioritising individual project success. To address this, I implemented a project prioritisation framework that evaluated each project based on its strategic alignment, potential value, and risk. This allowed me to make informed decisions about which projects to prioritise and how to allocate resources.
Another challenge in PPM is managing stakeholder expectations. In one project, the stakeholders pushed for their project to receive top priority, even though it had a lower strategic value than other projects in the portfolio. To resolve this, I held a portfolio review meeting with all key stakeholders, where we reviewed each project’s value and alignment with the organisation’s strategic goals. This helped build consensus around the prioritisation of projects and ensured that resources were allocated effectively.
Project portfolio management requires a strong manager with a good sense of strategic approach to prioritising projects, managing resources, and aligning with organisational goals while managing multiple projects as a cohesive portfolio, delivering value to the organisation and ensuring resources are allocated effectively.
