Project NOW: Planting Seeds of Opportunity in Rock Island, Illinois

In a recent interview, we had the privilege of speaking with Mr. Dwight Ford, the Executive Director at Project NOW, located in Rock Island, Illinois. Project Now is an organization deeply committed to serving its community in various ways, and Dwight Ford's extensive background and dedication to public service are at the heart of their mission.

A Multifaceted Background

Dwight Ford's journey to becoming the Executive Director of Project NOW is nothing short of remarkable. As a third-generation combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he learned invaluable lessons in leadership and commitment during his service. In addition to his military background, Dwight is an ordained clergyman with 25 years of experience. His perspective has led him to explore the intersection of faith, public theology, and serving marginalized and oppressed populations in a non-discriminatory manner.

Dwight is also in the process of completing his Doctoral studies in strategic leadership at Northwestern University, further demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning and leadership development. His diverse experiences have uniquely equipped him to tackle the challenges faced by Project NOW.

Project NOW: A Community Action Agency

Project NOW is classified as a Community Action Agency, a formal title that signifies its dedication to making a difference in the communities it serves. It is one of 101 such agencies across the contiguous United States and US territories. Each agency, including Project NOW, adapts its approach to address the specific needs of its community. This flexibility allows them to provide services that range from transportation and senior services to Head Start programs, LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), weatherization, roof repair, and home repair. Project NOW serves Rock Island, Mercer, and Henry Counties in Illinois.

One of the core principles of Project NOW is its role as an organizing body. Rather than merely providing social services, the organization brings together diverse stakeholders to collaboratively address the complex challenges of poverty and disadvantage. In essence, Project NOW serves as a catalyst for positive change within the community.

Funding and Support

Project NOW's ability to fulfill its mission relies on diverse sources of funding. They have substantial state contracts, partnerships with government agencies like the Department of Transportation and Health and Human Services, and receive support from local philanthropic organizations, foundations, and individual donors. Community involvement is also essential, as volunteers play a crucial role in advancing the organization's goals.

Dwight Ford emphasized the importance of getting to know Project NOW and its various programs. By understanding the different areas of interest, such as justice work, early childhood education, or senior services, individuals can find meaningful ways to contribute. Whether through volunteering or financial support, everyone can participate in Project NOW's mission to combat poverty and create opportunities.

Adaptability and Community Needs Assessment

Project NOW remains highly adaptable to the evolving needs of its community. Regular community needs assessments, conducted every two years, ensure that the organization stays informed about the changing landscape. These assessments involve focus groups, interviews, and input from various stakeholders.

This flexibility allows Project NOW to pivot swiftly when unforeseen challenges arise, such as natural disasters or community crises. An example provided by Dwight Ford was the organization's rapid response to a building collapse, where they provided immediate support to those affected.

A Motto of Hope: Rooting Out Poverty and Planting Seeds of Opportunity

Dwight Ford shared Project NOW's guiding motto: "Root out poverty and plant seeds of opportunity." This motto encapsulates the organization's unwavering commitment to addressing poverty's root causes while fostering hope and progress. Every day, Project NOW strives to make a positive impact on its community, firmly believing that their work can elevate individuals and families to greater heights of well-being and self-sufficiency.

In Rock Island, Illinois, Project NOW stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when dedicated individuals like Dwight Ford and his team come together to serve their community. Through their adaptability, commitment to assessment, and unwavering hope, Project NOW continues to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change in the fight against poverty.
