Are Project Managers Exempted from Gaining More Technical Knowledge?

In todays world of work, no knowledge is lost. However, its also important to focus on acquiring the knowledge that add the most value. From experience, i have known that it will be dauting for any Project Manager to function on any project he/she has little or no technical knowledge about. His level of reliance on technical experts will be too high which makes his/her capability to direct and make hard decisions very minimal. Thats why it baffles me when Trainers who have no technical background or experience claim to have the capacity to manage Technologically oriented Projects.

The fact is, Project managers are not exempt from gaining technical knowledge. Although the extent to which they need it can vary depending on the industry, organization, and specific project. Here are a few reasons why technical knowledge is important for project managers:

  1. Enhanced Communication: Understanding technical terminology and concepts allows project managers to communicate more effectively with their team members, stakeholders, and clients.
  2. Better Decision Making: Technical knowledge helps project managers make informed decisions about resource allocation, timelines, and risk management.
  3. Problem-Solving: With technical knowledge, project managers can identify potential issues early and contribute to finding solutions.
  4. Credibility: A project manager with technical expertise is often more respected by their team, which can lead to better collaboration and trust.
  5. Understanding Project Scope: Technical knowledge helps project managers comprehend the requirements and constraints of a project, ensuring that the project scope is realistic and achievable.
  6. Risk Management: Being aware of technical challenges and limitations allows project managers to foresee potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.

While project managers do not need to be as technically proficient as the engineers or developers they work with, having a basic understanding of the technical aspects of a project can significantly enhance their ability to manage it effectively.

I totally agree. When a project manager has no prior knowledge of the project they are handling,no technical experience, they will surely have flops and will cost the client's fortune, cost him time and reputation, also his credibility before potential clients will be ruined . No knowledge is wasted, keeping learning and improving one's self is key in any profession . Thank you sir for the obvious stated facts and knowledge sharing here .Adewale ADENIYI MSc. PMP? CPEM? i agree with you, however, i do believe the basic principles of being a project manager has to be adhered to. i spent the first few parts of my years in the construction industry relying so much on my team if experts but was able to make decisions as a servant leader. This has helped be get better at what i do can i say a know better. It also depends on the type of project as some are much more technical than the other but following the principles does help.
