#projectlogistics #projectcargo What we do (Part 2)
In PART 1 of this, I touched upon the similarities of “resource customer/stakeholder-to-logistics provider” tasks and needs which we both need to accomplish to be successful in executing a resource sector capital project.
Although similar, these are different (goals) and beg for alignment through communication, clarity and consensus for ultimate project success when it comes to critical transportation & supply chain management.?All parties must work together and not against, internally and externally.
Many different tasks, critical points and items for consideration.?The differences continue to be noted in PART 2 regarding each potential project with the end goal being a project executed on time, on budget and safe.?No surprise here, we need more of this…?
A complete surrender to transparency and communication.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Of course, no two capital projects are the same.?Different people over different periods of time, different locations, different obligations for each participant.?Lessons learned in past projects over time prove useful and very valuable in executing a successful project time and time again.?
Different transportation requirements.?For some, we as service providers are fortunate enough to be included into our customer’s journey early.?For others it is a matter of being included later into their project cycle with design and planning laid out, either partially or fully completed.?
For other, project logistics is included at a painful stage of change, re-design and added time and cost.
So what do we do again? Where does your logistics journey begin??From ultimate site location.?It begins with vision and review, moving backwards from pad site, across the land and sea back to the supplier’s factory.?
Roads, ports, critical lifts, infrastructure needed & changes to accommodate such wide and heavy mobilization is where specialized capital project logistics people earn massive value for resource sector customers and stakeholders.
Mods and piping, racks, tanks, electrical houses, shells, pressure vessels, columns and structural steel and so much more all need to be mobilized.?Specialized SPMTs & equipment, jack & slide, additional cranes to lift and position direct to pad site.?Staging, storing, coordinating and expediting of equipment purchased around the world – all in a day’s work for those in the complex world of project logistics.
Intense vetting by customers focusing on team experience, past successful projects and technical considerations and ideas are key decision points for choosing the right transportation and logistics partner.
Risk framework assessments, regional support planning, relationships with 3rd parties as well as financial strength, I.T. & visibility, quality and HSE standards all play a factor in this process.?Decision flow, standardized procedures, processes and staffing – much to plan for and much to consider.?Do not forget the ability to develop critical contingency planning for complex mobilizations through engineering methodology, critical route studies and risk assessments as commercial and technical review considerations.?
What else do we need to do? I cannot forget to include the wonderful world of legal and financial in the decision process either.?Without them, the uber-critical vetting to determine exact alignment between customer & service provider would not be possible.?
This critical high-level review process determines approved terms and conditions between the parties and ultimately the base structure in which the contract will be supported by the customer and the multitude of critically vetted vendors.???
Nuts and bolts, dollars and cents.?Supported, transparent and easily reviewed.
Moving past these important items are extremely critical design, mobilization and transportation points for technical lifting and transportation such as dimensions, weights, stresses/transportation stress, lifting in relation to structural design and conveyance & lifting equipment available functioning within a booking critical environment. All needed.?
To add to this, other critical items such as regulatory and critical supply chain management concerns of visibility of thousands of items sometimes.?
Managing a capital project is an extremely complex task typically undertaken by only those supported by organizations who have a wealth of qualified, dedicated and professional team members.
