Project based learning (PBL) is novel instruction technique extensively espoused across the global organisations, which enhances the productivity. This technique is creating new dimensions in terms of learning as well as delivery. This method is embracing the belief that learning through applying concepts, situational learning etc. is ideal. PBL require complex set of ability to work in a collaborative metric system environment involving project research and analysis, decision making, conflict resolution and effective interpersonal skills. Project management techniques has aroused in business that demands certain skills or competency for execution. Philosopher and Scholar Confucius defined this approach as “see, and remember: practice, and understand.” This process of learning helps the learner to assimilate, understand and retain the subjects. The project based learning has introduced a broader array of learning prospects (Chard, 2001). The objectives is to create learning communities of students and professionals to develop working in new methods, have better engagement reduce absenteeism and attrition towards both individual and organisational success. Research indicates that learners are performing better when groomed and taught in PBL environment (George Lucas Educational Foundation [GLEF], 2004b). These pointers validate the usefulness and influence PBL.
Benefits of Project based learning
Project-based learning is stimulating and thought provoking. It has become a preferred choice of learning with proven results. It allows learners to establish their competences while functioning independently. It demonstrates the learner’s aptitude to apply his learning in terms of research and analysis, Planning and designing the framework. It further develops to work with peers, building teamwork and group skills to align to the standards set and learning culture. Learners get engrossed in learning and it’s observe that they not only learn but improve their performance in terms of scores etc. PBL helps in building positive relationship when collaborating with fellow team members. Helps to work in teams, understand team dynamics, improve interpersonal skills and conflict resolution. This learning also builds a system of learning from mistakes; re-work for improvisation and being novel in approach. This also provides In-Depth Understanding in terms of understanding research based learning in evaluating the pros and cons in decision making and solution orientation. Critical and design thinking is another aspect of learning which helps the learn apply the fundamentals and ask questions before starting the project. However, perseverance, patience, collaboration and trust are important aspects learned in this process.
Project-based learning is an operative and effective method of comprising technology in the learning system. It undergoes numerous phases of problem resolving through structured ways of using project scoping, work, performance planning and tracking, managing qualms presented during problem solving activities of the projects. The learners have great opportunities to develop project management skills through PBL.
