Project 100 - Community Approach to Toxic Stress Using Systems Thinking

This summer, California’s Lower Russian River organizations took the first steps in organizing an effort on toxic stress in 0 – 5-year-olds. Toxic stress impacts the health and well-being of all humans but has an outsized negative impact on the long-term health of 0 – 5-year-olds as their developing bodies create maladaptive responses. In dealing with these kinds of challenges, communities often wonder why particular babies and kids have toxic stress. However, insightful communities will wonder why the community or ‘system’ itself is generating toxic stress. This is a subtle and powerful shift from focus on the individual to focus on the system and is the first step into “systems thinking.”??

River to Coast Children’s Services, the Guerneville School District, and West County Health Centers are the three convening organizations. As conveners, they are participants and stakeholders but clearly articulate that they are not the effort's sole owner’s or decision-makers. This creates a much wider net of shared power and ownership with the many stakeholders who choose to contribute their expertise of life experience and professional experience.??

The effort is called ‘Project 100’ as a reminder that there are 100 babies born in the lower Russian River Area each year. And its “guiding star” is that “all 0-5-year-olds?in the Lower Russian River area thrive in?safe, stable, and nurturing relationships and environments.”?There is a long road ahead to map the system and point the community to this star, but the first steps have been taken.??
