PROGRESSIVE FOOT CARE'S FOOT HEALTH NEWSLETTER JUNE 2020: The Effects of Exercise on Our Lives

PROGRESSIVE FOOT CARE'S FOOT HEALTH NEWSLETTER JUNE 2020

The Effects of Exercise on Our Lives

It is a well-known fact that exercise is important for us all to participate in to maintain proper health. Exercise can improve cardiac function, increase blood flow, and also strengthen muscles and bones. According to a recent article in the NY Times, written by Gretchen Reynolds, a study was recently published by scientists at Stanford University which analyzes how different levels in the blood change due to exercise. The study is the most comprehensive to date showing on a molecular level the changes that occur during and after exercise, underscoring how important activity is for our bodies and our overall health. The study was published in Cell in May of this year, and Reynolds' article can be viewed here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/10/well/move/a-single-session-of-exercise-alters-9815-molecules-in-our-blood.html?fbclid=IwAR2zDElpMS6yk-KVemJeNOGJqmaXVSa5IAg34_M4Ry88f7BDzKtpOTf0jqE

Areas studied in the past include metabolism, muscles, genes, immune responses, hearts, stamina and almost every other organ and biological system within us. With the development of sophisticated new techniques for counting and typing the thousands upon thousands of different molecules within us, scientists have been able to quantify more of the substances and steps involved in those processes. With these techniques, they have focused on various sets of molecules in our bloodstreams associated with different aspects of our biology. This research generally is known as “omics” science. Metabolomics, for instance, enumerates and analyzes molecules in our blood that influence metabolism — everything from appetite hormones to enzymes excreted by gut microbes. Genomics maps the molecules involved in gene expression; proteomics ditto for proteins; lipidomics for fat-related molecules; and so on. Although the study was somewhat small, only 36 participants, they measured the levels of 17,662 different molecules. The study revealed that more than half of those molecules, 9,815, changed after exercise compared to their pre-workout levels. Some increased, while others decreased.  Those who showed signs of insulin resistance, a driver of diabetes, for instance, tended to show smaller increases in some of the molecules related to healthy blood sugar control and higher increases in molecules involved in inflammation, suggesting that they were somewhat resistant to the general, beneficial effects of exercise. The levels of other molecules ranged considerably in people, depending on their current aerobic fitness.

Although this study was relatively small, it shows important factors that can be monitored in individuals looking to improve their overall health. While further studies are indicated, the information revealed is very beneficial in helping those suffering from diabetes, high inflammatory levels, or those just trying to improve their overall health.

During the summer, many of us enjoy exercising outdoors. While year-round exercise is best, especially a combination of aerobic activity and weight-training, it is not always easy for some of us to do. Many of us overtrain early in the season, leading to soreness in the form of various types of tendinitis and bursitis. It is our feet that often suffer the most due to jogging and walking. A simple home remedy that can help relieve soreness in the feet is to soak in Epsom salt. Typically, two tablespoons of Epsom salt added to a quart of room temperature water is all that is needed to provide some relief. Mix thoroughly and soak one's feet for 20 minutes. Recently, I was quoted in MSN.com for an article about this topic: https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/wellness/9-surprising-uses-for-epsom-salts-youve-probably-never-thought-of/ss-BB15x4vM If soreness or pain persists in the feet for more than two days, it is important to be evaluated by a Podiatrist.

Summer brings the lighter footwear styles, such as strappy sandals and fisherman sandals, mules, and slides, as noted in "Instant Style" for the June issue of InStyle Magazine. While strappy sandals can be supportive around the ankle, other types lacking support can lead to instability and foot pain. Mules and slides can be very convenient to wear, but may also lack the proper support, and so should not be worn for long walks or extended periods of time. As well, be mindful of the high heeled sandals, as any heel over two and a half inches can lead to foot issues and should be worn with caution.

At Dr. D-LuCS, any style is a possibility! For many years we have created custom footwear that is both stylish and comfortable. We utilize a high-tech approach with a fluoroscope and diagnostic sonogram to evaluate your feet for any notable abnormalities, as well as a full biomechanical examination of both feet and ankles. Our computerized gait analysis (CSGI) reveals whether or not there are any concerns with your walking pattern that need to be accounted for in the footwear design. While you choose the actual footwear style, we assist you in the design, adding a customized orthotic to enhance the support and comfort of your bespoke shoes. Please call us today for a complimentary telephone consultation and discuss the possibilities: 1-844-DRD-LUCS / 1-844-373-5827.

We all at Progressive Foot Care and Dr. D-LuCS wish you and your family an enjoyable summer. Stay active and stay healthy, and most importantly, stay safe.  Taking good care of your feet can be your first step towards good health.  Remember, your feet are the foundation for your body.
