#PROGRESSIVE #FOOT #CARE'S FOOT #HEALTH #NEWSLETTER #AUGUST 2016
#Back to #School #Shoe #Rules
As we near the final days of summer, it soon becomes time to prepare our children for their return to school. While the styles may vary each season, there are several important guidelines to follow when purchasing kid's shoes:
1. A sturdy shank or midfoot: The middle part of the shoe (between the heel and the toes) should not be able to be twisted. An easy way to test the shoe for sturdiness is to hold it in your hands and try twisting it. A stable shank or midfoot region can help prevent injuries, such as ankle sprains.
2. Laces or velcro: Be sure the shoes can be held together with laces or velcro. Slip-on styles never fit as well as those that can be tied or velcroed. Proper fit is important for functionality. A new magnetic lacing method is now available at www.zubits.com. While I have not utilized this product, it claims to eliminate knots and untied laces.
3. Adequate tread on outersole: The bottom part of the shoe that contacts the ground needs the right surface to prevent slips and falls. Tread should be thick enough to help grip the ground. A flat, smooth surface is not recommended as it may lead to instability.
4. Stable counter: The heel part of the shoe is known as the counter. It should be firm to provide good control of the foot as it contacts the ground.
5. Proper fit: General guidelines for children's (and adult's) footwear is three-eights of an inch of space from the tip of the longest toe to the end of the shoe. The width of the shoe should fit snugly, but not tightly. Too tight of a fit can lead to hammertoe and bunion deformities, as well as neuromas. If the shoes are too big, it can lead to tripping and falling injuries.
It is also important to remember to change sneakers once they have been worn for 300-500 miles. The midsole thins out, and most of the cushion and shock absorption is lost at this point. By simply replacing the footwear, many injuries can be avoided. For most children, new footwear once a year is adequate.

In Style Magazine features many different types of footwear in its August issue, entitled "Fall's Hot 5." Pumps, heels, ankle boots, peep-toe booties, slip-ons, mules, and slides are shown, getting us ready for Autumn. It is always essential to keep heels to two and a half inches or less for stability. Slip-ons and slides should not be worn for long walks due to their lack of proper fit. Ankle boots can add extra support and help prevent ankle sprains.
Most importantly, keep in mind that comfort is always in style. At Dr. D-LuCS, we custom design shoes with your needs at the forefront.
