Progressing our strategic ambitions: the financial close for our Abu Dhabi waste-to-energy facility

Last month, we joined our partners, the Emirates Water and Electricity Company EWEC and a consortium led by Marubeni Corporation, to celebrate the financial close for our waste to energy (WtE) facility in Abu Dhabi. The consortium, which includes Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), and the Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN), will support in developing the remarkable facility.

The facility will utilise one of the largest and most advanced moving grate technologies to convert municipal solid waste into electricity by using a highly efficient water-steam cycle. This aligns with our wider waste conversion projects, which are vital to enhance decarbonisation, unlock the circular economy and promote waste as a valuable resource.

In line with our ambition to divert 80% of waste from landfill by 2030, the project will have an expected annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste, enabling an expected carbon emissions reduction of 1.1 million tonnes per year. This will set benchmarks for WtE energy projects in terms of scale, efficiency and environmental benefits, helping to create a blueprint for alternative energy sources.

And with the plant adding 80MW of power generation capacity from a non-fossil fuel source, this partnership is an important step for our organisation and the country to achieve our collective vision for sustainable waste management and energy diversification.

This project is also directly related to Abu Dhabi’s first greenfield Material Recovery Facility (MRF), which we announced earlier this year. The state-of-the-art facility will recover recyclable materials derived from municipal solid waste, significantly maximising the diversion of waste from landfill through recycling and preparing feedstock for the WtE facility. This will enable increased recycling, promoting a circular economy and supporting our waste diversion targets.

Partnerships with like-minded organisations are core are key to helping progress our ambitions, and as we collaborate to develop the world’s most advanced WtE facility, and one of the region’s largest, this project showcases Tadweer Group’s commitment to national sustainability and net zero ambitions.
