To progress, you need a process

According to Linearity

  • Creativity is the most important skill in the world.
  • The biggest barrier to creativity is a lack of time.
  • Creators spending 10+ hrs/wk on content report being happiest overall.

As creative entrepreneurs, we've gotta do, consistently, the things that fill our souls and grow our businesses, which don't have to be mutually exclusive.

To progress, you need a process. I propose that you give each workday a theme to make things fun in your creative business, while also hitting key business areas weekly.

To do the right stuff with less effort, you need to make it spicy:

  1. List all touchpoints that require your direct involvement
  2. Create daily proactive themes to guide you each week
  3. Categorize each touchpoint under a theme

Now, let’s break it all down with some high-level bullet(proof) points…

To list your touchpoints…

  • Start with the things you sell, your clients, your projects, etc.
  • List the broader items that need your magic touch (content, outreach, research, etc.)
  • Designate each touchpoint as a proactive or reactive task

To create daily proactive themes…

  • Consider how you acquire and retain customers and prospects
  • Review your list of proactive touchpoints
  • Define how what you do fits into your audience’s lives

To categorize each touchpoint…

  • Jot down every activity you’re responsible for personally executing
  • Each task should serve that day’s theme
  • Set aside time to deal with emergencies and opportunities

As creative business owners, we face a lot of comp for our attention daily. With daily themes, we become more proactive than reactive in our business. I’ve been using themes for years now and swear by the efficacy of this process.

Thanks for breaking this down, Darnell. Theming your day gives it and you a focus. This can be so helpful when things start flying around like a tornado.

My post from today also addresses Process and Progress from a totally different lens. What an interesting synchronicity!

Very true. And it can be the hardest part.
