Progress Towards an Electric Vehicle Era; Goals and Challenges

India has been dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and implementing measures to enhance the climate's well-being. Consequently, the government has prioritized its efforts to ramp up the manufacturing and adoption of electric vehicles. There have been several policy measures that have been introduced to encourage electric vehicles, and the efforts towards this goal seem to be paying off.

As per a Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) report, the total retail sales of electric vehicles, including passenger and commercial vehicles, have increased by 25.5% for November. The e-two-wheeler sales were up by 18.82%, the e-three-wheeler sales rose by 32.37%, and the electric passenger vehicle sales grew by a staggering 77.35% on a year-on-year basis. Despite impressive growth figures, the industry remains in its early phases, holding immense growth potential that India intends to fully capitalize on. India has a target to achieve net zero emissions by 2070, and large-scale adoption of electric vehicles plays a huge part in achieving this goal. According to a report by Bain and Company in collaboration with Blume Ventures, the electric vehicle market is poised for significant growth, with the potential to achieve more than 40% penetration by 2030, versus what is currently 5%, largely driven by large-scale adoption of two and three-wheelers, while the anticipated adoption in the four-wheeler category is estimated to reach 20% according to the report. These projections are, however, contingent on addressing certain structural issues concerning new product development, customer segment prioritization, distribution or go-to-market, software development, and charging infrastructures. Currently, approximately 10,000 fuel pumps across India have implemented electric charging facilities.

India holds an ambitious vision to become a fully electric vehicle nation by 2030. Whether this goal can be attained remains to be seen however, the nation appears to be making significant strides in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles.
