Progress and Roadblocks: The State of Women on Corporate Boards – Q4 2024 Report
50/50 Women on Boards
The leading global education & advocacy campaign accelerating gender balance and diversity on corporate boards. #5050WOB
As we look back at 2024, our latest Gender Diversity Index? (GDI) Report highlights both momentum and persistent gaps in corporate board leadership. While we’ve reached key milestones, the data makes it clear—there’s still a long way to go.
At 50/50 Women on Boards , we analyze these trends because leadership at the highest levels shapes corporate strategy, innovation, and long-term success. Here’s where things stand as of Q4 2024:
Key Findings from the Q4 2024 Gender Diversity Index?
? Women now hold 30.1% of corporate board seats—a step forward, but far from equal footing.
? Women of color hold just 7.4% of board seats, showing that progress isn’t reaching all groups equally.
? More companies are achieving gender-balanced boards (with at least 50% women), yet many still lag behind.
? Boards with women in leadership roles—such as Board Chair or CEO—are significantly more likely to add women to their boards.
?? The Challenge: Growth Is Slowing
Although more women are securing board seats, the pace of change is too slow to reach balance anytime soon. Our data reveals:
?? The rate of adding women to boards has declined compared to previous years.
?? Women of color are still overlooked, even as companies acknowledge the value of diverse leadership.
?? Many companies follow a “one and done” approach—adding a single woman to their board rather than making lasting shifts toward balance.
?? Why It Matters & What Comes Next
Balanced leadership isn’t just about optics—it’s about stronger governance, smarter decision-making, and better financial performance. Companies with diverse boards are consistently outperforming those that maintain the status quo.
To accelerate progress, we need:
?? More companies to set clear targets for gender balance, not just small improvements. ?? Investors and stakeholders to push for real commitments, holding boards accountable. ?? More board-ready women in the pipeline, ensuring there’s no excuse for slow growth.
