Progress with Purpose: The Q3 Gender Diversity Index

At 50/50 Women on Boards , we’re driven by data—and our Q3 2024 Gender Diversity Index (GDI) is a call to action for us all. In partnership with Equilar , the findings reveal both progress and challenges for women on Russell 3000 company boards.

Women now hold 30.2% of board seats, a modest 0.2% increase from the last quarter. But the pace of change remains slow: at this rate, gender parity and 20% representation for women of color won’t be reached until 2045.

?? Women of color hold just 8% of board seats, unchanged from Q2.

?? 41% of companies still have boards with two or fewer women.

?? 13.8% of companies now boast gender-balanced boards—up slightly, but far from enough.


Why Does This Matter?

Diverse boards drive innovation, improve performance, and reflect the world we live in. Yet the representation of women and women of color remains staggeringly low.

Questions to consider:

  • What would happen if every company committed to at least three women on their boards?
  • How can companies accelerate diversity efforts, rather than settling for incremental gains?
  • What role can YOU play in driving change—whether as an advocate, ally, or future board leader?

The findings reinforce one thing: When women lead, boards move closer to parity. We see this clearly in companies with female leadership, where board diversity consistently outpaces national averages.

Excellent post. Please keep this information consistent and frequent. Boards respond to data, and this data is alarming. More intentional action needs to be taken to achieve parity. Thank you for this.
