"Progress overrides" against "retained logic."

"Retained Logic" and "progress override" are terms commonly used in project management, particularly in the context of scheduling and task dependencies. Let me explain each term:
Retained Logic:
Retained Logic, also known as "as late as possible" or "as soon as possible" logic, refers to the scheduling approach that determines the start and finish dates of tasks based on their dependencies and constraints. It ensures that tasks are scheduled based on their logical dependencies, meaning that a task cannot start until its predecessor task(s) are complete. Retained Logic helps maintain the integrity of the project schedule by preserving the inherent relationships between tasks. It takes into account task dependencies, constraints, and schedule flexibility, automatically adjusting the start and finish dates of dependent tasks when changes are made.

Progress Override:
Progress override, also known as "actual dates" or "status date override," is a feature in project management software that allows manual adjustments to the progress and status of tasks. It enables project managers or team members to update the actual start and finish dates of tasks independently of their original planned dates. Progress override is useful when there are deviations or delays in the project schedule that cannot be captured by the original task dependencies or constraints. By manually adjusting the progress, project managers can provide an accurate depiction of the project's current status. This feature allows for schedule changes to reflect the actual progress and helps generate accurate reports for analysis and decision-making.
To summarize, retained logic ensures tasks are scheduled based on logical dependencies and constraints, while progress override allows manual adjustments to actual dates to reflect the current status of tasks. Both concepts are important in project management as they contribute to accurate scheduling, tracking of project progress, and informed decision-making based on up-to-date information.

The concept of retained logic v progress override applies to the way progress is calculated when the work in a logic based CPM schedule is completed out of sequence. The progress override option assumes all activities can finish based on the progress data, the retained logic assumes the network logic applies to the remaining portions of the in-progress activities and any subsequent work. A simple worked example of the two concepts and the different schedule outcomes can be seen at: https://mosaicprojects.com.au/PDF_Papers/P217_Calculating_Completion.pdf (see page 6)
