We’ve all heard the phrase “progress over perfection”. It’s become a mantra for many of us as we embark on a new, perhaps difficult task.? But while we focus on moving forward (making progress), there’s another layer to consider: authenticity. Because let’s be honest, what’s the point of making progress if it doesn’t feel true to who we are?? We struggle with wanting to make progress but at what cost?
?I'm here to give you a new way to reframe this idea with a different perspective:? Progress over perfection is about showing up as who you are, not someone else’s ideal version of you.? However, when you combine progress with authenticity, you create results that not only move you forward but also feel more meaningful.
?Before moving on, let's define authenticity. In its simplest meaning, authenticity is about being true to ourselves, our being, who we are at our core, and our values and morals.??
Why Authenticity Matters
?So why does authenticity matter?? Did you know that being authentic is scientifically linked to happiness? When we live more authentically and are aligned to our values, we experience higher life satisfaction and a fulfilling and content life.? When we strive for perfection, we often mask who we are, to meet what may be unrealistic expectations. That might bring short-term approval, but it leads to burnout and dissatisfaction in the long run.? Do, do, do, just to make progress but in the end, are you pleased with the result?
Perfection is a Moving Target
?Here’s the secret fact about perfection: it’s not real. It’s very much subjective and a moving target.? It shifts based on trends, opinions, and of course our inner critic. Imagine you’re preparing for a presentation.? You can spend hours fussing over the aesthetics of the template, but is the extra effort over the content really worth your time? Progress is delivering the presentation, knowing the content is accurate , and being okay if the template is not on point.

?When we let go of perfection, we free ourselves to enjoy the process. And when we’re authentic, we get the presentation done our way and we convey the message that needs to be heard vs the visual representation.? Yes, both are important, however, the accuracy and delivery overrides the "stylish" template.
Authentic Progress Builds Real Confidence
Making progress authentically means working or doing what truly matters to you, not what society or others think you should accomplish. For example, if your dream is to learn the ukulele, don’t compare yourself to professional players online. Start by learning three chords and work your way from there. Authenticity allows you to celebrate milestones that only you care about instead of chasing the ones designed for someone else.
?This kind of progress builds lasting confidence because it’s rooted in your values and passions. You’ll feel proud not just because you’ve improved, but because you’ve stayed true to yourself along the way.?
Progress, Authenticity, and Imperfect Wins
?The next time you think about "Progress Over Perfection", remember this: progress isn’t just about moving forward, it’s about moving forward as your real, imperfect self. When we act in a way that is true to ourselves (authentic), every action we take, regardless of its size or how imperfect it appears will be more meaningful.?
Perfection might be shiny, but it’s fragile. Authenticity, that’s real and unbreakable. So, go ahead: embrace your quirks, take those imperfect steps, and let your authentic self shine through. Then, watch the magic happen.
