In the Sustainability world, we love to reuse and recycle, so I'm reusing/recycling this idea from Edith Cecchini's 7 Tries at Living More Sustainably on past tries and future attempts for more sustainable living, in the interest of sharing as well as receiving tips and tricks from this community.
Key Swaps in 2022 and Goals for 2023:
- Switched to either bar, sheets or refill soaps, shampoos, and detergents. Some of my favorites have been Love, Beauty, and Planet's 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner Bar, Blueland's powdered refill for Body Wash and Dish Soap, ECOS Laundry Sheets, Ethique's Face Cleanser Bars, and Tirtyl's Foaming Hand Soap Tablets (plus I have a year's worth of hand soap in a little box that takes up very little space in my cabinet). I tried to switch to Blueland's dishwasher tablets, but they did not work well in my dishwasher, so looking for recommendations on any that folks have tried and work for 2023!
- Tried refillable make-up from MOB Beauty and loved it! I travel a lot for work, and their refillable compact makes it super easy to grab and go with beautiful shades modeled on multiple skin tones. My goal for 2023 is to ONLY buy refillable make-up (caught a Subscribe & Save Order on non-refillable eyeliner just-in-time this week). This will force my hand to consume less overall, as I tend to impulse buy lipsticks, which unfortunately aren't refillable for the most part.
- Eat less red meat. I did a gut health program in 2022 which limited red meat to 2 servings or less per week and it was pretty easy to stick to. Where this fell apart for me (and general healthy eating habits) was work trips. Goal for 2023 is to maintain this, even on work trips.
- I've been bringing my own reusable cup for coffee/matcha lattes for a while, but my goal in 2023 is to ONLY get coffee in either for-here or reusable cups
- I joined a Sustainable Style Club in 2022 (it was towards the end of the year in case folks who know me are questioning the club's efficacy) to be more mindful of my clothing consumption and primarily use what's already in my closet. Goal for 2023 is to buy less than 20 items of clothing (including shoes, eek), and be conscious of both the environmental and social impact of what I'm buying (Good on You is a cool app to check each brand's rating). I'm also trying to repair holes vs buying new, and just discovered NOSO patches as a fun way to do this.
- I use my pressure cooker whenever possible vs. my stove, but goal for early 2023 is to switch my propane stovetop to an induction one (better for health too per the latest consumer report).
- Big home improvement goal for 2023 is to get solar on our new home, as well as an electric car. A related goal is to bike at least 50% of the time to places within 4 miles (with safe bike routes).
Alongside these goals, continual habits include buying recyclable products made with recycled content over non recyclable ones, buy less and more thoughtful toys for my kiddos, more beach clean-ups, and taking advantage of San Diego's new curbside composting program. Oh and we might get chickens. Any other sustainable suggestions, products, or habits that folks are continuing or starting in 2023?

1 年Love this Allison! I hadn't heard of NOSO patches - will check them out as well as MOB. One goal for me this year is to experiment with local bulk food options!
