Progress Made Real – We’re Just Getting Started

Thirty-five years ago, the founding concept of Dell was democratizing technology to help advance human progress on a global scale. Now, technology is more accessible, connected and powerful than ever before, and the progress has been incredible. From life expectancy and infant mortality to vaccinations and basic health care to literacy and kids in school to economic growth and poverty rates — humankind has made astonishing advancements. Yet, we all know, there is so much more to do. In fact, we are just getting started. With the emergence of a connected, intelligent world, we are seeing an explosion in the amount of data. By combining this data with 5G and advanced computer science like artificial intelligence and machine learning, we can do more than we ever imagined.

Yesterday at the Dell Technologies Summit, I delivered this message of technology optimism, because although any tool can be used for good or bad, I believe technology has overwhelmingly been a force for good in our world. I also believe that Dell Technologies has an important role to play.

At the Summit, I announced Progress Made Real – Our Vision for 2030. This is a plan full of audacious goals grounded in real action. While we don’t know exactly how to do all these things today, that’s the point. It stretches us, and you never know what you’ll discover, innovate and achieve when you set a bold goal and work hard to make it real. Progress Made Real is centered on four areas where we can have the greatest impact:

• advancing sustainability
• cultivating inclusion
• transforming lives
• upholding ethics and data privacy

For example in sustainability, one of our ambitions is one-for-one recycling — meaning by 2030 for every product a customer buys, we will reuse or recycle an equivalent product. Or take the area of diversity and inclusion where we have committed that by 2030 women will comprise 50 percent of our global workforce. These are important advancements, but perhaps the one I’m most excited about is our commitment to transform the lives of a billion people through application of technology to the world’s most pressing issues like healthcare, education and economic opportunity.

We believe that the exponential growth in the amount of data holds the key to solving some of our greatest challenges, and that’s why we call the coming ten years The Next Data Decade. We are hard at work integrating and innovating across our portfolio to unlock the power of all that data. When we get this right, all of us will be standing at the center of the greatest period of productivity and human achievement in history — putting data to work to build a better world.
