Progress and hope for MS patients

Progress and hope for MS patients

Not even two decades ago, medical science had virtually nothing to offer the more than two million patients worldwide suffering from the debilitating disorder of the central nervous system called multiple sclerosis (MS).

The impact of MS on the individual patient is enormous, with a wide range of chronic and potentially disabling symptoms that can profoundly reduce quality of life and even cut life short. The disease imposes high costs – physical, emotional and financial – on patients and those close to them. A 2010 study estimated total average cost per person with MS in 2007 at USD 41,000 across the 15 Western economies considered. Globally, that amounts to many billions of dollars.

There is hope! In just the last few years, new treatment solutions have emerged with welcome regularity. Such visible progress has MS researchers highly motivated, and work on further innovative approaches to counter disease progression and symptoms is making rapid headway.

We are doing our best to accelerate that progress. Some of the best minds in the field are currently hard at work in our labs exploring innovative ways of using patients’ own body chemistry to defeat MS by “short-circuiting” the chain of events that manifest in disease reactivation.

The mechanism of action involved is very innovative, but innovative approaches to thwarting disease are what we’re dedicated to.

It’s up to ongoing clinical trials to provide robust data about the reliability and safety with which the desired effect can be achieved, and further investigation is required, but so far, we’re encouraged by our findings.

This is how progress comes about, and being part of that progress means a lot to our company. We derive great satisfaction from knowing that we’ve built a track record of making a positive difference for MS patients, and are determined to make additional contributions in this area.

Of course, no improvement can come quickly enough for patients and their loved ones. We share their joy at every new breakthrough and are pleased to acknowledge the progress today, on World MS Day, where we can reflect on all we have accomplished as a collective community, #BringingUsCloser.

Eat garlic every day to prevent disease.

Thanks Belén for these efforts. I am very proud of the progress, also as the mother of a young emerging researcher, Angela Vidal at Valle Hebrón International MS Centre. However, it still seems that lacks conviction in pharma companies and health institutions to introduce into the clinic practice innovative training that facilitate mental and emotional wellbeing of family members. Beyond psychological and occupational support, there is a place where we can take to the relatives and patients. Beyond MS, beyond cancer, to life fully lived!??I wonder how much could that benefit patient outcomes, do you??I'm willing to measure it and looking forward! :-)
