Programming our Mind for Success

I recently heard about a Scientific study that shows that the Conscious mind processes information at about 100 mph while the Subconscious mind processes it around 100,000 mph! This suggests that before your Conscious mind can make a decision, your Subconscious mind is scanning and analyzing information and has already made the decision for you. 

In other words, the Conscious mind is merely an observer of the Subconscious. Our Subconscious has  dominion in our lives. This understanding of human behavior is not new. Contemporaries have been studying the power of our THINKING for years. Here are some great books on the subject:

  • The Battlefield of the Mind  by Joyce Myers
  • The Power of Habit  by Charles Duhigg
  • The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy
  • The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey  

The ancients like King Solomon also understood this principle. 3000 years ago he wrote:  “So as a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.” Proverbs 23:7  

The way we THINK (our attitudes and beliefs) determines how we Act. Our Actions determine our Results. In addition, our Actions repeated over and over become our Habits and Habits form our Character. Our THINKING, our programmed Subconscious, has much to do with our quality of life and our ability to be a benefit to others. 

Unfortunately, our THINKING is constantly under assault. The truth is we are always being programmed either passively by the world or proactively by ourselves. I believe this is a core reason why we struggle with change. Most of us have left our THINKING unguarded and subject to world programming. We struggle with destructive thinking and bad habits, seemingly powerless to change. We struggle to act and react as we want to, constantly disappointing ourselves and others. Our Subconscious holds us hostage (unless we reprogram it)!
The good news: We can Consciously choose our programming! 
Thinking change is real change. Thinking change requires new information AND new programming! New Information can help create short term change, but it's the programming of that information  (THINKING) that makes the change stick.
C.S. Lewis put it this way, "we all have to be continually reminded of what we believe."

This practical truth can be found working vividly throughout the new Testament. Believers are encouraged to daily pursue the new truths they have learned lest they fall back into old thinking (and habits). 
"Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind!" Romans 12:2

Og Mandino's masterpiece; The Greatest Salesman in the World.  This success manual written in 1968 has sold over 50 million copies. To me, it is one of the Sales Professional's most valued assets for developing the right Thinking and Habits (thus producing the right Results).

It contains ancient wisdom distilled into 10 simple scrolls. The scrolls each have a principle designed to replace bad habits built up over a lifetime which "threatens to imprison my future" (Scroll I) with good habits developed through a ten-month process of studying the scrolls. The instructions are to read each scroll 3 times a day, in the morning, at lunch and before bed, for 30 days before moving on to the next. Og used this Conscious programming of our Subconscious to program ourselves with the Thinking we need to reach our potential: "As I repeat the words daily they will soon become part of my active mind, but more important, they will also seep into my other mind, that mysterious source which never sleeps, which creates my dreams, and often makes me act in ways I do not comprehend. As the words of these scrolls are consumed by my mysterious mind I will begin to awake, each morning, with a vitality I have never known before. My vigor will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, my desire to meet the world will overcome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and I will be happier than I ever believed it possible to be in this world of strife and sorrow." (Scroll I)

Scroll I - I will form good habits and become their slave.                                   Scroll II - I will greet this day with love in my heart.                                             Scroll III - I will persist until I succeed.                                                                   Scroll IV - I am nature's greatest miracle.                                                               Scroll V - I will live this day as if it is my last.                                                               Scroll VI - Today I will be master of my emotions.                                               Scroll VII - I will laugh at the world.                                                                        Scroll VIII - Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.                               Scroll IX - I will act now.Scroll X - I will pray for guidance.

Og's clear message is that every person on earth is a miracle and should consciously choose to direct their life with confidence to the laws that govern abundance. Would you like the wisdom of these scrolls to be a part of who you are? They can be. Your investment is small; a few moments a day.
