I had the pleasure of interviewing Vanessa Cooper! Watch the full interview here:
Vanessa Cooper is a life transformation coach and personal trainer. After attending Law School in Brazil, graduating in International Affairs in the US, and subsequently obtaining an MBA she switched careers and decided to pursue her true calling: changing the quality of people’s lives by helping them transform mentally, emotionally, and physically. She spent the past 20 years investing in becoming an expert on human behavior and understanding how to create lasting results in her own life and in the life of others. She has a passion for helping people break through limiting beliefs, create change in an instant, and live a life of excitement and fulfillment.
In addition to personal training individuals and groups in a live as well as online setting, Vanessa does corporate training, holds workshops and seminars, masterminds, and does one-on-one coaching. Her favorite themes to speak on are those involving the power of mastering one’s state to create change in a moment, how to turn life’s SHOULDS into MUSTS and how to create long-lasting change.
She is certified by the Robbins-Madanes Institute which is the official Tony Robbins coaching certification program, as well as the Knowledge Broker’s Blueprint and American Council on Exercise.
Vanessa has learned to use pain and life’s challenges as motivation for creating a life of joy, purpose, and fulfillment. Her desire is to inspire others to do the same!
Here are some interview questions :
*Why are you passionate about (your industry, business, or cause)?
I am passionate about my business because it helps people transform their lives and find joy, purpose, excitement, physical, mental and emotional strength.
Helping people gain tools that allow them to increase their quality of life brings me incredible joy.
I get to help people understand:
- What their emotional home is;
- How to master and change their state to create change in an instant; and
- their 6 human needs and whether they are meeting those in positive, neutral, or negative ways. People often meet their needs in negative ways and therefore find themselves unable to achieve the things they truly desire.
It is my passion to help people understand why they do what they do and how to create change that will lead them to the life they truly desire and are proud to live.
*How did you decide to become a massive results coach (life transformation coach)?
In 2000 when I moved to the US I became familiar with Tony Robbins and fell in love with his ideas of mastering our emotions and designing a life rather than allowing life to happen to you. At that time I purchased and devoured every single course he had and knew in my heart that I wanted to work doing what he does.
But then I got married, worked in corporate America, got an MBA but also became a personal trainer as that became another passion of mine. I had the babies and did all the mom things, and I personally trained. Then a few years ago my life turned upside down and my marriage crumbled overnight. I had to reinvent myself and start over. That’s when I decided it was time to pursue my true passion so I invested in becoming a certified Tony Robbins coach (through the Robbins-Madanes Institute) and decided that there was no better time than right now to go after my dreams!
*Is there a major obstacle you overcame you are able to share with us?
When my marriage crumbled, like most people who go through a divorce I had to redefine who I was in brand new terms.
I was a mom of 3 with my youngest being younger than 1 and I lost my footing. It is not easy to see everything you worked to build crumble overnight and to feel like you are starting over in your 40s. There is a huge sense of identity loss when you go through like trauma such as divorce so I had to find strength again for myself, for my children, and for my mom.
I have to say, though, that I did not do it alone. God, my church family, my dear friends, and this rock of a woman called my mother really gave me strength when I had none and that is why I encourage anyone going through trauma to find support.
*How is it different from what you have done in the past and what skills from your past positions give you a different perspective that benefits your customers?
I have been a personal trainer for many, many years. People often fail to get the results they desire in their nutrition, exercise, and health and fitness journey because of what’s going on in their brains. The limiting beliefs, the ways they negatively meet their needs, often taking them steps back no matter how hard they are exercising.
My passion is not just coaching or personal training. I love integrating the physical and mental aspects of creating your best life. Without taking care of our health and creating our strongest bodies possible something essential will be missing,
Because your body is the temple! You can’t trash the temple! Without tackling the mental and emotional aspects and understanding the impact of your decisions, thoughts, focus, values, identity, and much more you can’t get the results you are after!
In other words, I bring my personal training knowledge and my coaching knowledge together to help people become strong mentally, emotionally, and physically and reach their goals in each aspect of life whether I am personal training them in personal or coaching them online!
*Who is a person that you considered as a role model early in your life? How and why does this person impact your life?
I have always admired people who have overcome tragedy and have found purpose, laughter, and determination on the other side of tragedy. Those stories have always inspired me. There was a young woman I knew growing up who lost all members of her family (immediate and extended) in a moment as they drove to her brother’s destination wedding location.
She was the only one not with the rest of the family as they suffered a horrible multi-car accident. I remember her comforting others when she should have been comforted. In the depth of her pain, she found purpose, drive, and joy in life.
Stories of people who overcome all odds are very inspiring to me.
*What are the most important decisions that you face daily as a leader in your organization and in the community?
How I am going to show up each and every day.
Deciding to push doubt and fear aside.
I believe that when we turn our SHOULDS into MUSTS when we are 100% committed and we resolve (to resolve means to cut off any other possibility) then we push against all obstacles.
I sell myself on my goals daily. You and I will get distracted daily so we must sell ourselves on our goals each and every day. We must be crystal clear on our outcome and remind ourselves of our why every day.
I also flood my mind daily with things that put me in peak state so that I can show up at my best. That means the weather, the news, my kids don’t get to determine what kind of day I have. I decide what kind of day I’m committed to having and flood my mind with Bible promises, devotionals, podcasts, and music that reinforces the state I’m committed to living in.
*How do you foster creative and innovative thinking? How are ideas shared and implemented?
I am obsessed with learning. None of us is ever done learning. SO I am always looking at what is going on in the world and working to anticipate what are the needs of people in response to where our world is. During COVID19, for example, being ready to talk to people about ways to deal with stress and anxiety, unexpected life changes and fear is how you stay relevant. It’s all about understanding people’s needs and helping them overcome what’s holding them back so they can get to the next level of their lives.
*What advice would you give someone entering your industry for the first time?
Don’t live in a scarcity mentality as if someone else’s success precludes yours. I love saying that there is enough pie for everyone so someone else getting a piece of the pie does not leave you with any less. Support the growth of others. The tide raises all boats!
*What are the most useful resources that you would recommend to someone looking to gain a better perspective into becoming a better leader?
Lead with integrity.
Understand your values and your vehicles for meeting your needs. Reevaluate them. Sometimes we hold values and rules that were passed down to us or we picked up along the way but never consciously decided if we still believe those. Sometimes we hold rules for our lives that make it impossible for us to feel successful or fulfilled. For example, if you have a rule that you must never experience rejection in order to be successful you will pretty much guarantee that you will feel like a failure often. If, instead, if you change your rule to : I am successful if I lead with integrity and serve with honesty and commitment, then you will make it possible to feel successful.
I also suggest people learn and master the TRIAD for directing their state through physiology, focus, and language.
Finally, if we are to become great leaders we must put our actions where our mouth is. We can’t live our lives talking about what we should do. We must turn our SHOULDS into MUSTS and lead by example.
*Where are some of the places you have traveled or lived? What are some of your hobbies?
I was born and raised in Brazil and lived there until I was just short of 21. In my teenage years, I traveled a lot. I got to study Spanish in Spain, Italian in Italy, and got to travel around Europe and come to the US often. In the year 2000, I moved to the US.
My hobbies are exercising, paddle boarding, traveling, and having fun with my kids.
*Work-life balance how do you accomplish this? (in this question you can choose to share if you have kids, pets, whatever you are comfortable with.
I rise early. The early quiet hours are precious. That is what I call hour(s) of power. That’s when I exercise, do my personal devotion, a journal set the tone for my day by clearly deciding what kind of emotions I will experience that day and what are my musts for that day. When I am up early, before my kids and give that time to myself then I am better able to give fully to my kids when they are up.
Exercise is a must for me. It gives me mental, physical, and emotional strength, it helps me manage stress, so it’s a must. So is every other part of my morning. That is the only time I can ever get in front of the computer so rising before the rest of my household is how I take care of me in order to better take care of everyone else. Balancing is about giving to ourselves and not feeling guilty when we give to ourselves just as we don’t feel guilty giving of ourselves to our children
*Do you have a word for 2019? Do you have a book you recommend that has helped or inspired you to achieve great things?
GO BIGGER!!! In every area of my life, I have decided to GO BIGGER: in my commitment to my kids, in my witness of God’s goodness, in my desire to serve. I wanted to go big…but God said GO BIGGER so that’s what I’m doing.
Book; The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino
*Besides your business what are you most passionate about?
1. My God – I have gone through some really challenging times and God has proven His faithfulness to me over and over.
2. My Children – they are my entire world.
3. Health and Fitness – mental, emotional and physical
*Do you have any referral partners or other great businesses you would like to give a shout out for?
YOU! What I admire about you, Jessica is twofold. You are SO competent and unbelievably good at what you do. But I also admire your commitment to serving others, to building other professionals up, and to serving your community. You raise the ride for everyone and you genuinely want to help other business owners succeed.
Another group of business coaches that are top-notch and have propelled me forward with so much knowledge, passion, and unbelievable business coaching is the Generation Impact Academy. You can find them on FB.
*What is the most important next goal you are trying to reach that I and or my network can help you achieve?
Have a full schedule of coaching clients – both personal and corporate though that is not something I can openly say on the interview because of the legal issues you know about.
