Profound Professional Interview with Luis Maia de Freitas: PhD Research Associate and Host of the PhD Lounge Podcast
I had the honor of interviewing Luis Maia de Freitas, a PhD research associate and host of the PhD Lounge podcast. Luis is currently pursuing his PhD in Ancient History at Swansea University, and his work centers on exploring the influences of Greek and Roman cultures in the Middle East. With a BA in Cultural Heritage and Archaeology from Universidade do Algarve and an MA in Ancient History from Swansea, Luis brings a wealth of knowledge and a global perspective to both his academic research and podcasting endeavors.
Luis’s journey in academia has taken him across Europe, from his native Portugal to the United Kingdom. In addition to his rigorous PhD studies, he has been actively involved in the academic community, organizing conferences and networking with professionals. His travels and exposure to different cultures have deeply enriched his worldview, adding depth to his work in ancient history and archaeology. Luis’s podcast, PhD Lounge, is a platform where PhD candidates and graduates share their experiences, offering insight into the daily challenges they face in academia, from securing funding to navigating the complexities of thesis writing.
Professionally, Luis has balanced his PhD studies with part-time work at Nando's and teaching history of art through the Brilliant Club program. He is passionate about the subjects of ancient history and classical culture, and through his podcast, he connects with an international audience of PhD students, offering them advice and insights. His background in archaeology and ancient history has positioned him as a valuable voice in both academia and public discussions on research challenges.
Luis’s ideal client for his podcast is any PhD candidate or graduate who faces the real-world challenges of academic life. His guests range from early-career researchers to established academics, all of whom have valuable insights into the PhD experience. His listeners benefit from late-night conversations that are both candid and insightful, shedding light on issues such as writer’s block, conference preparation, and the intricacies of academic research.
When asked for a tip to help PhD candidates, Luis emphasized the importance of perseverance. Drawing inspiration from the quote by Les Brown, "It’s not over until you win," Luis encourages his listeners to keep pushing forward, no matter the obstacles. His own journey has been one of dedication, and he imparts that wisdom to his audience.
Luis’s book recommendation is The Art of War by Sun Tzu. He explains how its timeless lessons on strategy can be applied to academic life, from organizing one’s studies to navigating the competitive nature of research and conference participation. The strategic thinking laid out in the book has helped Luis manage the demands of his PhD, podcasting, and professional responsibilities.
As for his own work, Luis is considering writing a book after completing his dissertation, which focuses on ancient cities in the Middle East during the Greek and Roman periods. While this research is academically rigorous, he hopes to make it accessible to a broader audience through future publications. His podcast is also an ongoing project, which he plans to expand into a full-time endeavor after submitting his dissertation.
To wrap up, Luis leaves his audience with this final thought: "Your dream has a new challenger that comes after each victory you achieve in life. Build your dream and don't stop cementing it until you overcome your life challenges." His philosophy is one of resilience, communication, and teamwork, qualities he applies to his academic and professional life.
