Profound Professional Interview with Dan Nicholson, Financial Strategist, Best Selling Author, Entrepreneur Certainty Advisor & Nth Degree CPAs' CEO

I had the honor of interviewing a CPA, financial strategist and entrepreneurial expert, Dan Nicholson. Dan is not your boring finance guy; he's a best-selling author and serial entrepreneur dedicated to helping purpose-driven entrepreneurs achieve financial certainty.

Dan has been a serial entrepreneur since childhood, always scheming business ideas. He is the founder of multiple companies in finance, accounting, and software. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Seattle University with degrees in Accounting and E-Commerce Information Systems, he was selected for a prestigious fellowship with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). This experience set the stage for his unconventional approach to finance and accounting.

Dan's professional journey is marked by his creation of Nth Degree CPAs in 2008, where he focuses on strategic tax planning, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and financial planning for small business owners. He also founded CertaintyU and developed the Certified Certainty Advisor (CCA) course, a 20-week program designed to help entrepreneurs become extraordinary leaders and reach the top 1% of their industry. Dan's work extends to other ventures, including Certainty News and Unconventional Wealth, which offers insights into different wealth types and strategies for financial growth.

Dan's ideal clients are purpose-driven entrepreneurs with businesses generating $1 to $10 million in annual revenue. These clients often have advanced degrees and seek the missing pieces of information needed to grow their business and achieve the lifestyle they desire. They typically do not have an on-staff accountant or CFO unless they are very high volume businesses, like large restaurants.

During our conversation, Dan shared a crucial business tip: focus on asymmetric risk. This means seeking opportunities where the potential upside significantly outweighs the downside. Dan emphasized that many small business owners make risky bets with little to no reward, such as poorly planned ad campaigns. Instead, he advises looking for opportunities that offer substantial returns with limited risk.

Outside of work, Dan is active in the Seattle University community, serving as a past President of the Alumni Board of Governors. An avid athlete, he's completed three Half-Ironman triathlon races, raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Dan's also a fervent supporter of the Seahawks and Seattle University Basketball. He treasures time with his wife and daughters.

Dan has authored a book titled "Rigging the Game," which provides insights into making better business and life decisions. The book outlines principles for understanding and leveraging common misconceptions about success, helping readers engineer the life they want on their terms.

Dan's final thought for our audience is a powerful one: "How can you expect to do something extraordinary if you're conforming to the average? Don’t be average. Embrace your unique qualities and shine."

Dan's insights on asymmetric risk are truly valuable for entrepreneurs. His approach to finance is refreshingly unconventional.
