A Profile on Chins – Shaping Your Face with Dr William Mooney

Besides the fact that the chin is one of the first places to show signs of ageing (gravity dictates that when your skin falls south, it ends up on your chin!), the shape of your face is often said to be one of the most determining factors in whether or not you are considered beautiful. Now, whilst we don’t completely agree with this – we think all shapes and sizes can be considered attractive; if you have either a particularly protruding chin, or a non-existent one, it can affect the overall aesthetic balance of your face. Also known as Mentoplasty, Dr William Mooney says “Chin implants are designed to augment the jaw to correct any structural problems and improve the shape and overall balance of the face. They are often performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to help balance the proportions of the face. A facelift is also a popular procedure performed alongside chin implants, again to improve the balance of the face.”

Facial analysts generally agree that a strong jawline or a more prominent chin is associated with a more powerful or dominant personality. Dr Mooney agrees, “A strong chin has traditionally been regarded as a sign of strength and success, which might help explain the increase in demand for chin implants or chin augmentation.” This seems particularly true, and indeed while men tend to want a more chiselled, wider, square and “masculine” chin; women also want a contoured and shapely chin but tend to look better with a smaller, more rounded shape. If you have the opposite to what is generally considered “attractive” or typical of a man or woman it can affect how you, and others, see you. Ie. if you’re a man with a tiny, more “female” chin you might be labelled as “less masculine” and not taken as seriously as someone with a more prominent chin. As unbelievable as it might sound, it can affect how others relate to you and even their levels of trust in you, even if it is subconscious! A man with a strong chin is considered “dependable” and more powerful than one without. It may even affect your job prospects. Whilst some of us find this unacceptable and unfair, we all know that appearances DO make a difference when it comes to success in the workplace.

So, how do you know what you’re going to look like with a completely different shaped face, or chin? Dr Mooney explains that during a consultation he discusses the changes you would like to make and then examines your face, skin and bone structure. “We use advanced computer imaging software which is then used to plan the changes to your face structure and provide an accurate visual reference. This enables patients to see first hand the significant difference that subtle chin implants can make to your face and profile.”

Chin Implant Procedure

Dr Mooney tells us about the actual implants used. “Chin Implants are made in varying degrees of shape and size. They are made out of different synthetic materials that have been used safely and successfully for many years and look incredibly realistic and natural on any face.”

Advances in the approaches and techniques of chin surgery and implants means that you won’t even have any external scarring. The incision is actually made inside your mouth, although in some cases a small incision may be required under the chin. Discuss your options with your surgeon as to which technique suits your desire outcomes better.
