On Monday 7th of November 2022, presentations for the Professor John Gennard prize winners and award of the prizes took place. Professor Dennis Nickson opened with a welcome “John Gennard was a great academic, with his research useful for both policy and practice.” The John Gennard prize is an amazing opportunity for employability, opening fantastic avenues to students whose work is recognised by it.

The evening began with networking and viewing of 3rd place prize winners' posters, Andreas F. Landsmann , Sandra Sneddon (ACIPD) , Chris Hughes , and Connor MacPherson . These students have spent the past year working hard to achieve an MSc in Human Resource Management and MSc International Human Resource Management in the department of work, employment, and organisation at the University of Strathclyde. The winners received a wide variety of questions ranging from the content of their poster to advice for future MSc students.

The second part of the evening began with an online presentation from 2nd place prize winner, Scott Nelson . Scott’s Dissertation was titled ‘An evaluation of how to maintain the psychological contract of employees within an expanding SME.’ He worked with a company called MaxxClean, gathering large quantities of data from employees using a questionnaire.

Scott finished his presentation with some tips and advice for current and future MSc students. He emphasized the importance of being “agile in your approach” as internal and external factors can change the scope of the research. He also highlighted that “working with a good organization that is happy to collaborate can make the process much easier.”

The final presenter of the night was 1st prize winner, Rebecca MacKinnon MSc . Rebecca’s dissertation was titled ‘The Translation of EVP into the High Skilled Contingent Context: A study of values, people and culture.’ She worked with a company called TCM Group, conducting semi-structured interviews to better understand employee value proposition (EVP) in a remote contingent workforce.

Rebecca concluded her presentation with advice to current and future MSc students informing the audience to “be a researcher and be objective.” This project gives MSc students the opportunity to report back to the companies they had collaborated with, giving them recommendations. Rebecca emphasized the importance of “not feeling pressured to only present the positives to an organization.” Rebecca now has a full-time job with TCM group all because of hard work and focus throughout the process.

Congratulations to all the presenters from the event who graduated on Tuesday 8th November, wishing all the best for the future.
