NCBA+NCBF Disaster Legal Services: Helping Hurricane-Affected Residents of WNC

The North Carolina Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division coordinates the?North Carolina Disaster Legal Services (DLS)? effort in partnership with the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC). The DLS pro bono program provides disaster-related resources and services to the public and attorneys with the support of the North Carolina Bar Foundation, the NC Pro Bono Resource Center, and the NCBA Paralegal Division. The NC Disaster Legal Services pro bono program is working alongside, and in support of, Pisgah Legal Services in serving residents of Western North Carolina affected by Tropical Storm Helene. Volunteers are needed to provide basic counseling, advice and limited scope representation (typically via phone), as well as in person at clinic and Disaster Recovery Center-based brief advice and counseling events (dates, times and places TBD).?Learn more and get involved here .

When Disaster Strikes: Managing the Emotional Response

In this Expert Series, Dr. Richard Hicks of BarCARES and Cathy Killian of the NC Lawyers Assistance Program (NCLAP) spend time discussing the various emotional responses to disasters, both personal and professional, with some specific implications for attorneys. They share tips on healthy behaviors to engage in to enhance the ability to cope and move toward resilience, as well as unhealthy behaviors that impede the recovery process. Our speakers also provide information and perspective for individuals directly involved in and impacted by Tropical Storm Helene, as well as for those providing emotional support to affected community members.
