Professionalism explained: A generic set of behaviors, values, and qualities for budding professionals

Professionalism can endow aptitude with the right attitude, in order to create a scope for self-fulfillment if not self-actualization.

Professional skills are necessary for the personal and professional growth of an individual beyond a degree. These include abilities that can lead to the effective and efficient functioning, of the individual, as a person, a team member, and an employee of an organization. It can be acquired and displayed, through the range of skills that go beyond the talent or knowledge that one gets or is expected to acquire, from the pursuit of a degree.

Professionalism can be defined as the display of 'great skill and ability', which manifests in the workplace, in the form of an individual doing his job, with sincerity and genuineness, leading to logical and unbiased actions.

Some of the ways in which professionalism is manifested include;

  • Do the job to the best of your ability.
  • Take pride in your current job.
  • Your work helps others do better.
  • Report on time and stay for the entire shift.
  • Honestly earn your pay.
  • Treat customers and co-workers with respect and dignity.
  • Good manners in interactions with others
  • Keep an eye on the job at hand.
  • Respect your work and yourself.
  • Take care of resources, whatever their cost.

Common qualities and attributes associated with professionalism:

Thanks a lot for a beautiful compilation. One request! Do add "replying to emails and messages" in it! :) The amount of 1:1 emails that get unanswered is not even funny, and worst is selective replies. I have a running joke that some people have a limited set of replies allowed as part of their monthly package, so they won't answer your question if it's not a priority for them. Just being mindful and replying to 1:1 messages (even saying I don't know or I am not the right person) need to come back into the corporate culture.
