Everyone is talking about “The Great Resignation.”

Todo mundo está falando sobre “A Grande Demiss?o”.

I think a much more important development than that is in progress: “The Great Rejection.”

Acho que um desenvolvimento muito mais importante do que isso está em andamento: “A Grande Rejei??o”.

Of course, both phenomena are not only closely related, but they are intimately intertwined.

The impetus, of course, was the sudden, unexpected impact of the pandemic that turned our lives and the entire globe upside-down, compelling us to live a completely different paradigm- instantly. We went from thinking and saying that changing the “system” was impossible, or could only happen over years, or decades.

O ímpeto, claro, foi o impacto repentino e inesperado da pandemia que virou as vidas e o mundo inteiro de cabe?a para baixo, obrigando-nos a viver um paradigma completamente diferente, instantaneo.Passamos de pensar e dizer que mudar o “sistema” era impossível, ou só poderia acontecer ao longo de anos, ou décadas.

So, The Great Resignation is a product of people actually experiencing their lives as they never had before. People who were given back scores of hours, each month- time, the most important resource we have. Many people experienced, observed and came to know their families in ways they never had before. Many- cut-off from stores, restaurants and leisure activities rediscovered reading, studying, cooking, making and remaking their homes. They discovered and REdiscovered their lives……and realized that their identity and essential being was not a job, profession or title.

Muitas pessoas vivenciaram, observaram e conheceram suas famílias de maneiras que nunca conheceram antes. Muitos, foram cortados de lojas, restaurantes e atividades de lazer, redescobriram lendo, estudando, cozinhando, construindo e refazendo suas casas. Eles descobriram e redescobriram suas vidas……e perceberam que sua identidade e ser essencial n?o era um trabalho, profiss?o ou título.

We have also discovered the truth of an old axiomatic saying- “Money can’t buy you happiness.”

Também descobrimos a verdade de um velho ditado axiomático: “O dinheiro n?o pode comprar a felicidade”.

Which brings me to the subject of this article.

I have a client that is an agricultural researcher for a multinational conglomerate. He is fascinated with innovation and technology. He feels that he is in the professional phase of his career to advance to higher positions of greater responsibility, with the resources and power to effect changes and advancements.

He has been recently recruited by a couple of different head-hunters for other prestigious companies. I was involved in reviewing and revising his cover letter, so I was completely aware of his sincere interest and desire to pursue the selection process.

Just recently, he informed me that he had gone through several progressive interviews, and finally, at the end of the process, the company CEO offered him the position.

The salary offered was 30% more than he is currently receiving; the position offered exactly the scope and activities that he wanted.

He said that after all of the effort of going through the process, he turned down the offer.

However, my amazement turned to deep admiration after he explained his reasons.

He told me he had researched the company and its culture, including talking directly to friends and acquaintances that worked there. They described an intense environment, which is sometimes described in code by recruiters as a “high-energy, fast-paced company.”?What it meant is that working on weekends and late into the night was the routine, not the exception, or even just on special occasions or situations. It was how life was expected to be.

Ele me contou que havia pesquisado a empresa e sua cultura, inclusive conversando diretamente com amigos e conhecidos que trabalhavam lá. He has a newborn child, and he has had the opportunity to share the experience with his wife and family, since he is still working mostly remotely from home.

He also looked at the city where the job is located, and researched the commute to work, and it is apparently a little worse than his commute in Sao Paulo. He, like so many of us, has really realized how much of our lives we have sacrificed to the time and stress of commuting that accumulates to as much as 3 months of unpaid working hours each year.
