Professional Success & Self-Worth: Finding Fulfillment Beyond Your Career

In today's world, where our lives are so entangled with social media influences, professional success often becomes interconnected with self-worth. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that we are more than just our jobs. How many of you have given this thought or wondered about it?

My recent Twitter post on this subject garnered some interesting responses.

While our careers play a significant role in our lives, finding purpose outside of work is essential. Whatever the reason for seeking this fulfillment outside of work life, all of us will reach that point sooner or later. Major life events, impactful personal changes, and midlife crises could be some of the reasons that prompt us to seek this fulfillment.

How does one recognize this need? Each of us has a unique journey in our careers, and there may come a time when fame, power, and monetary achievements don't seem enough. Perhaps that is the tipping point when life beyond work calls us.

How does one discover or even rediscover the lost purpose outside of their career? Again, there may not be a one-stop solution or a single mantra for this discovery process. Asking questions like "Why am I feeling this way?", "What is missing?", "What can I add to my personal life?", and "When am I the happiest person?" could provide some answers.

I also believe that taking a step back from the hustle and bustle of one's career provides the time and mental energy needed to discover this purpose. I've been asking myself these and many more questions over the last two weeks, and here are some highlights from my thoughts:

Understanding our own desires beyond work life: Identifying our hobbies and areas that make us smile and feel content. Beyond the daily grind, I wish to go on long cycle rides and sing Bollywood tunes aloud. I asked myself, "Why should I not train myself to sing better? I don't need an audience to clap; I just want to feel good."

Family & Friends: There can be no greater emphasis on the value of a social circle outside the workplace or business contacts. As we progress in life, we may lose good friends, stop communicating with relatives who mean well, and distance ourselves from family members who can provide emotional support. These relationships not only add a sense of belonging but also help us identify lost desires and rekindle them. Perhaps they can even create magical opportunities for a greater experience leading to fulfillment.

Philanthropy & Volunteering: Careers tend to be self-centered, but giving back to people brings joy. Philanthropy doesn't only mean sharing your material wealth ; it can also involve sharing your time and knowledge. Teach children, spend time with the elderly, volunteer at a place of worship, or engage with like-minded people in a community. Find a social cause that is close to your heart. Activities like these reduce isolation and introduce a profound sense of meaning in life.

Self-Care: The demands of a career can sometimes take a toll on our mental well-being. Incorporating mindfulness practices, meditation, and self-care routines into your daily life can help reduce stress and increase self-awareness. Prioritizing mental health along with physical health is not only important but also something you owe yourself. You have to matter to yourself.

These are some of the statements which helped me in my discovery journey: I want to see myself beyond my current job title. I want to seek various opportunities where I can contribute to the world. I want to prioritize my physical and mental health and well-being as personal goals.

Mull over the statements that will guide you. You are more than your job, and taking steps to explore the richness of life outside of work can lead to a happier, healthier, and more successful you.
