What is “Professional” to you?

Wikipedia says that the etymology and historical meaning of the term professional is from Middle English, from profes, adjective, having professed one's vows, from Anglo-French, from Late Latin professus, from Latin, past participle of profitēri to profess, confess, from pro- before + fatēri to acknowledge; in other senses, from Latin professus, past participle. Thus, as people became more and more specialized in their trade, they began to 'profess' their skill to others, and 'vow' to perform their trade to the highest known standard. From this note, we shall realize that becoming a professional person needs process and skills. Our skill is being shaped until it defines the real “You”?

I’ve been working in HR for about 17 years. I have gone through the Ups and Downs of HR matters, especially in recruitment, talent acquisition, employer branding, training and development and also people engagement. I have been working with corporations and startups.?

Wherever you are, everybody always expects you to be the perfect one. Yes, becoming professional means becoming perfect. But, becoming perfect is not about becoming what people want but becoming the real you. Becoming professional will lead you to the right path where you can be who you are. And I believe that there are processes to be on the right path.?

A person asked me if I have ever tried other positions than HR. And, I said, NO. Seventeen years working experience in HR has never made me feel unwell and disappointed. If 17 is the time for people to turn from teenage to young adult, then 17 years of my HR working experiences will put me in the way to be on the top. I just have to enjoy the trip to be on the top of becoming a professional in HR.?

Becoming professional will not stay in one place. Perhaps, I have to move in and out, to move forward and backward. Maybe I have to be very flexible but at the same time I have to be very strict with the rules and regulations. Maybe I have to feel angry but also show my best smile to everyone around me. And, yes, I believe this. Becoming professional is not about making everybody happy.?

I thank myself and my universe that showed me people with distinguished integrity. I believe that their words and phrases telling me to listen and be more sensitive to my heart and my surroundings are also part of my journey to become professional. Because I cannot control the world, then, I just need to control my world and become professional in my life. So I can end myself with a smile.
