Love your POV, and 100% agree. The research is critical because the "problem owners", i.e. Business often can feel the pain associated to a problem, but needs help in solving it, because they often don't understand dependencies, histories and their tech landscape. I would actually go so far as to say I would prefer to work with people with lower coding acumen who can take the time (and have the experience asking meaningful questions) to help solve problems vs. hard core technical resources.
