A Profession That's "Beyond Ordinary Commerce"

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Frank Capra movie?It’s A Wonderful Life, so I thought I’d reprise my article remembering its main character, George Bailey, famously portrayed by Jimmy Stewart.

This time of year, I think of?George Bailey, the character from the Frank Capra movie?It’s A Wonderful Life.?Despite dashed dreams and thwarted ambitions, Bailey’s grit, resilience, empathy and compassion reveal him to be a decent, caring human determined to be a contributing member of his community.?And Clarence, his movie angel, tells him?“Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”

My fellow REALTORS?...those of us engaged in a profession that is?“beyond ordinary commerce” (the words used to describe our profession in the Preamble to the REALTOR? Code of Ethics)…must see the parallel.?We are?making a difference in people’s lives?the same way George Bailey touched those in his world.?Every time we work with a first-time home buyer or a growing family or seniors downsizing, we are not just transacting commerce…we are touching lives. Think about it. How much grit, resilience, empathy and compassion do you demonstrate with every client, and how do your efforts impact the lives of those you serve?

I believe our profession is full of George Baileys, and I thank all of you for making a positive difference in people’s lives. I also appreciate the many friendships we make in this business while serving others. As Clarence wrote in a book inscription: “Remember, George: no man is a failure who has friends.”
