Profanity in Business - *#%&#%@&#*
When you are in a business conversation and one of the participants peppers their conversation and items with profanity there is a problem.
We will take a look at three possible reasons for this.
The first is that the person is insecure either in their role or with the information or facts they are working with.? They will quickly fill in comments using profanity as a bridge.? This may sound like emphasis but can be used to connect disparate piece of information that sound like they belong together but do not.? This allows them to present themselves as an expert.? Questions about the item are precluded because the speaker sounds so authoritative on the item that you, the listener, should instantly understand.
They may use the profanity as a statement of surprise at some piece of information offered by another member of the conversation or to report some item that they need to present.? This allows the speaker to express deep concern about an item they are not fully versed in, want to avoid or want to bury.? It will also be done to silence specific participants.? The rest of the group sees the uncouth treatment of the other participant and because of delivery, ascribes the fault in the conversation to the speaker rather than the person attacked in such a way.
They are truly an angry and dangerously incompetent individual.? They are aware of their inability to work through the problem or carry out the work but are afraid to speak up about it.? These individuals will not only use profanity in their theatrics but may resort to angry actions like throwing items, banging on things, making shadowed or overt verbal threats or worse.
There are two things to keep in mind when you encounter an individual like this :
1.?????? You are looking at a possible career opportunity.? That is, if you want that person’s job or one like it, they will provide you with examples of how not to do it and will also, over time, provide plenty of opportunity for you to outpace them and outsmart them.
2.?????? You have been presented with your future and can act upon it.? You may want to start seeking another job at the company you are at or at another company.? The important thing to keep in mind this case is that if you desire to switch to another department in the company you are seeing this behavior in, you are likely to encounter it again, all the way to the top!
Profanity has no place in business.
It has taken precedence in some circles due to the confusion, lack of understanding and fear of individuals in positions they should not be in.
It has grown in American society because of the constant barrage of poorly written scripts for entertainment – in radio, movies and television, that rely on profanity to jump from one subject to another rapidly, introduce a surprise reaction or to indicate serious fear.? As you can see the reasons it is used in entertainment are similar to how you will see profanity show up in business.
In extreme cases you will find a co-worker, supervisor or manager, using profanity in a way that may seem remotely familiar.? As if you had seen the behavior somewhere before.
In that case you are not looking at a business person.? You are looking at a worker who communicates using phrases and words they have picked up from those same entertainment channels – radio, movies and television.
Now that you know profanity is a poor replacement for caring, hard work, you can figure out what your next move is when you encounter someone who relies on it for any reason at all to further their ends or halt you in yours.
