PROF. ATTAHIRU JEGA, THANK YOU

The Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) joins millions of Nigerians and lovers of democracy worldwide to whole heartedly congratulate and appreciate the immediate past chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Attahiru Jega for his exemplary, focused, visionary and revolutionary leadership of the electoral body which culminated in the conduct of a free, fair and credible 2015 general elections.

We are aware that Prof. Jega assumed the leadership of Nigeria’s electoral commission in 2010, at a critical time when the electoral body had assumed notoriety for scandalous, sham and rape on democracy conduct of elections as witnessed in 2003 and 2007. This was a period in which virtually all the elections conducted by INEC were characterized by massive rigging, vote stuffing, ballot snatching, high scale violence, vote padding, production of results where elections didn’t take place, etc and thus, election results were subjected to post election litigations all over the country.

Despite all the challenges and landmines laid in his path, Prof Jega was able to conduct the 2011 general elections in a manner that was a radical departure from his predecessors in which the peoples vote started to count and he capped it up with the innovative introduction of the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and E-Card reader for the 2015 general elections which ensured that the principle of democracy as emphasized in one man, one vote, one woman, one vote at the polls was observed.

The leadership of Prof Jega has gone a long way in revolutionizing our electoral system in such a way that the level of electoral criminality and brigandage has reduced drastically, people’s confidence in democracy has soared as their votes now count through the introduction of PVC and E-Card reader, the number of post election litigations have reduced drastically, etc. Nigeria’s conduct of election under Prof. Attahiru Jega has now become the role model for the world as attested to by local and international observers as well as the international community.

Prof. Attahiru Jega, as you bow out graciously after five years of patriotic and conscientious service to your fatherland as INEC chairman in which you served faithfully, honestly, focused, with sincerity of purpose and fear of God, it is our fervent prayers that may the Almighty Allah continue to protect and grant you good health for greater service to humanity.

Prof. Jega, you came, saw and conquered. We are indeed very grateful.
