Production Enhancement Using Jet Pump
Common mature oil and gas field problem revolves around depleting of production pressure which have direct impact on production rate. There are many options can be considered in reviving mature well’s production. The options can be categorized into two main group, hardware installation and reservoir management. Under reservoir management, few option can be considered are as below:

Upon operating pressure depletion, weak wells are not able to meet production header’s operating pressure which normally operating at minimum export pressure. Hence, weak well production ceased to stop producing and isolated from production system. With Jet Pump installation, weak well’s low operating pressure can be boosted, and match required production header’s operating pressure, and this will allow the well to continue producing.

Motive Internal Nozzle is designed to accelerates high pressure motive fluid to induced low pressure in the Jet Pump’s throat by targeting the operating pressure to be lower than Jet Pump’s suction pressure. This leads to suction’s fluid to flow through the Jet Pump. Upon comingle with motive fluid, the fluids will be channeled to Jet Pump’s diffuser. Within diffuser, fluids kinetic energy is converted to potential energy (pressure) by progressively reducing the fluid’s velocity.
Even though Jet Pump is a universal equipment that can handle various type of fluid, the performance is highly dependent on jet pump’s geometry. Hence, the operating curve for jet pump is quite narrow and design conditions variation potentially have negative impact to the performance. This will be a challenge to well production system as well’s pressure depletes over the time. There are cases recorded where Jet Pump can only be online for as minimum as six (6) months due this problem.?To overcome this issue, conventional Jet Pump is not an option. Interchangeable design shall be adopted to prolonged Jet Pump’s operation. Interchangeable design consists of the followings:
Fundamental data required in designing interchangeable jet pump is well’s performance data throughout production years as to ensure the interchangeable parts are design correctly to cater the range completely. Piping design, lifting equipment and ample space for jet pump’s maintenance shall be provided for changing and replacing the parts as required.
High pressure fluids within production premises such as injection water, gaslift or high-pressure gas / condensate from HHP (High High Pressure) well can utilized as motive fluid. Operators should be careful when opting production fluids as motive in view of Jet Pump’s motive internal nozzle is designed to handle single phase (either gas or liquid) fluid only. If multiphase fluid is expected at the motive supply line, a scrubber needs to be provided and separated fluids can be routed to comingle with suction fluids prior to export via Jet Pump.
In short, jet pumps can be a good, less expensive and easy option for boosting production of weak wells, but whether they are the best option for your specific situation will depend on several factors. Afterall it essentially works by creating a pressure differential between wells and the surface, which then cause water to flow up from well. If you are considering a jet pump to boost production from a weak well, it is important to consult with a subject matter expert/ engineer to determine whether this is the best option for your specific situation.
