I like that SharePoint integrates with the rest of the Microsoft Office family of products. I also like that security is integrated with Microsoft Windows and domain security. And finally, I like how it's relatively easy to set-up custom mini-apps fairly quickly.
SharePoint is ugly, clunky, and more complex and rigid than most need it to be. It is also a bit buggy when you start building complex apps that use workflows, calculated fields, etc more.
I used it to build internal dashboards, portals, and apps when we didn't have budgets to "do it right."
Dashboards, portals, and mini apps. The most robust app was scheduling construction crews for a natural gas utility.

Indirect. Our IT department maintained the relationship. I was simply a Power User.
